Boeing is exploring a possible sale of its space business as its new CEO seeks to improve the embattled company's financial position, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
The company is weighing a divestiture of its NASA business, including the problem-plagued Starliner vehicle, the newspaper reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
Asked for a response, a Boeing spokesperson told AFP the company "doesn't comment on market rumors or speculation."
Chief Executive Kelly Ortberg, who joined Boeing in August, said earlier this week he was reviewing company operations with an eye towards narrowing Boeing's profile.
Boeing is better off "doing less and doing it better than doing more and not doing it well," Ortberg said Wednesday during an earnings conference call with analysts.
Although he did not indicate plans to scale back Boeing's space program, Ortberg pointed to commercial planes and defense as "core" products that "will always stay with the Boeing company."
The statements came after Boeing reported a whopping $6.2 billion loss due in part to the drag from a six-week labor strike in the Seattle region that has shuttered two assembly plants.

I’ll bet Musk picks it up!
They may have to pay somebody to take it off their hands—a dog with fleas!
They can’t let the space business go. What will all the DEI hires do?
Why would he want it?
Business is booming
Fact is that space is finally becoming a commodity as Reagan wanted back in 1981.
There is still big bucks in space, but not for rigid companies like Boeing.
D.E.I.
Ripe to be bought on the cheap by Musk.
Fire the entire “Human Resources” department or the parasite will kill the host.
The problem is the D.E.I. bug infects the companies at the top level. Then all it can do is drag it down.
There’s a videogame company that went D.E.I. — turned the hot female characters into fugly bulldykes. Added a — get this — African-American Samurai in ancient Japan. LOL!
Look at Star Wars. 100 BILLION lost in value to the Disney company and they just don’t clean house because the infection is so deep they’d have to reboot the company.
Musk should buy it. That would be a hoot.
The DEI hires are throughout the QA department.
I know. I used to work at Boeing.
Is their sales pit “well we can at least get you there….”
I agree with you, why would Musk want Boeing’s space business when he already has the #1 space launch company in the world and it’s not even close, SpaceX is lapping the field against everyone in the world including Russia, China and every other country.
The DEI hires are throughout the QA department.
I know. I used to work at Boeing.
Makes sense. Those people seem to only be able to criticize, not create.
I have a cousin that has been an engineer with Boeing/Nasa for years. He is retiring at the end of this year because of this garbage.
Boeing’s problems predate DEI. It’s the MCDD merge. MCDD culture of shareholders first took over, they ran out the people who wanted to make quality, and they’ve been going downhill ever since.
“I’ll bet Musk picks it up!”
He will. Then he will gut it, take what can be used for his Space X program and that will be it.
Musk would do what he did with twitter. Fire most of the work force that are doing BS work.
Shame they can’t or won’t do what needs to be done themselves.
$10.00 - $10.00 right there! Do I hear $15? 15? $15.00 right here. Thank you little lady. 15 looking for 20! Do I hear 20 ? 20? $20.00get this whole thing! Lookin’ for 20 . . ..
Rigid is exactly right.
