They have talked about “atmospheric rivers” for a long time, and it is fairly descriptive. It just is temporary and normal weather, having nothing to do with global warming.

Sea level is zero altitude.

Pretty scary to think of that doubling.

Meh. I dont agree. Long before the climate fairy tale was made up, the term “Pineapple Express” was in wide use to refer to this phenomenon. AR is an apt metaphor to describe it. That it, like everything else, is sued to further the fairy tale doesn’t take away from the fact it’s a useful shorthand

Let me check...sea level here in Santa Barbara is, um, zero? Double it and it’s still zero.

+++++++++

What’s really scary is when temperatures double, or shutter to think quadruple, from 1 deg F to 4 deg F.

I think this quip is appropriate for newsweek here:

Life is hard. It’s even harder when you’re stupid.

IIRC, that covers the idiot and imbecile IQ range; you must be referring to left-tards. They are called leftists because they are on the left side of the Bell Curve.

The writer obviously flunked high school physics since he knows nothing about the Pascal Principle that states that water seeks its own level. You can not have a rise in sea level in the Pacific Ocean without an equal rise in the Atlantic ocean and all other interconnected oceans.

Furthermore, the majority of rain on land comes from the oceans, as water vapor rises from the ocean surface, condenses into clouds, and then falls as precipitation. "Atmospheric Rivers" are nothing but massive amounts of ocean water evaporation. This article is nonsensical fear mongering.

Uh... isn’t sea level height the same as water depth? As measured from the bottom of the Marianas Trench, that would be pretty impressive.

Whe is all this xea level rise supposed to happen? Photos of sea shores going back hundreds of years are the same as today’s coastlines.

“Double sea level HEIGHT??”

What does that even mean?

The average sea depth is 12000 ft, so now it’s going to be 24000 ft?

These guys are utterly insane?

Whoever wrote this was scientific ignoramus.
So many factual and mathematical idiocies, it is hard to find all of them.

For example:

Rising by 200% means double???!
Doubling means rising by 100%! Rising by 200% means tripling something

Doubling or Rising sea level by 200% ?
So the sea will rise to like 12,000 (or 24,000, see above) feet?

Rising sea - there is an OCEAN up there!
No atmospheric river can rise its level!

Rising sea - the atmospheric river they talking about consists of water evaporated from the same sea. So it will just return.

Why they do not have any fact checkers at Newsweek!
I guess, they hope, their readers are as stupid as they are?

Well, it could happen, it happened before, a few trillion years ago.

The last time they had a “atmospheric river” hit British Columbia it caused major flooding in the Fraser River area/watershed. The whole Sumas Valley flooded out.

This is no different than what just happened in TN/NC. When you get a lot of rain in a short period of time in a mountainous area the water goes down hill fast. The result is flash flooding.

The last time this happened in BC it greatly affected the BC lumber industry causing a spike in pricing just when it had finally come down from the highs during covid. This happened the week before or after our Thanksgiving. Several mill towns flooded out. Bridges washed away, etc.

Actually, it can never happen!
There is just not so much water on the Earth.
If every drop of ice melts and every lake empties, the oceans will rise by about 200 feet! Easy calculation, if your literacy level is slightly above of the author of this article!

Since we will gain Antarctica, Greenland and other glaciated lands, there will be still a lot of land left to roam.

Friend lives about 200 feet about sea level. He hopes for seashore property soon!

“Another made up term (as opposed to wind currents) to fuel their climate nonsense.”

It is more than just a ‘wind current’.

It also carries a high moisture content. A ‘river’ in the sky.
