Al Smith, the beloved four-term governor of New York, was the first Catholic to appear on a major party ballot for president.
The 1928 presidential campaign was marred by the Herbert Hoover organization unleashing a wave of anti-Catholic bigotry, aided by the Klu Klux Klan and other nativist groups, that accused Smith of being an agent of the papacy and hence the devil himself. Protestant preachers railed against him from the pulpit. Even mainstream protestant churches warned against Smith's "dual loyalties."
The Smith campaign was such a disaster that neither major party would put up a Catholic candidate for thirty years, when Democrats nominated John F. Kennedy.
Smith died in 1944, and in 1945, the most political Catholic cardinal in American history, New York's Francis Spellman, decided to hold a dinner to "bring together America’s political, business, and military elite to raise money for various Catholic charities," according to City Journal's Vincent J. Cannato.
Spellman's chancery in New York City was known as "the powerhouse," and no Democrat could win the nomination without his blessing. It was mostly a New York affair until Spellman invited both Kennedy and Richard Nixon to the 1960 dinner.
JFK, who had his own Catholic problem, was reluctant to appear, believing that Nixon would exploit the dinner for his advantage. Eventually, he relented and gave a tremendous performance, including the line of the night about hoping to get an invite to a Quaker dinner now that Nixon attended a Catholic dinner.
The dinner didn't always host both candidates, and in recent decades, several candidates have either not been invited or refused the invitation.

New York is a rigged, one-party state. In NY City they don't even "count all votes." They do a statistical sampling, declare a winner, and throw away the rest. No one has assumed it mattered since the 1980s.
Not only did she blow it off, she sent in that ridiculous video mocking Catholics, honestly she mind as well have sent in nothing, it was a total disaster, if Trump had sent in something similar I would have said the same thing..the entire thing made ZERO sense, it was stupid and lame..then she tells a woman in Wisconsin saying “Jesus is Lord,” Oh you are at the wrong rally go to the smaller one down the street..WOW what a b*tch
She claims to have been raised in a black Church of God in Oakland, CA, but I doubt that’s true. A lady that knew her Grandmother in Jamaica says the pic in Kamala’s book is not the right woman (Candace Owens latest podcast).

Kamala's video was totally lame. Cringe worthy. Embarrassing.

As a Catholic i will say any Catholic who votes for harris is as dumb as any Jew that votes democrat.

Honestly I doubt attending or passing this thing will move the needle much.
I’d she loses PA by a very slim margin then perhaps but I can’t see that many people who were contemplating voting for her refusing to because she skipped this dinner

I don’t know which is worse. Her non-appearance or that awful video she sent in lieu of an appearance.
It reminds folks again that she can’t do anything on her own; it dragged out one of the most unlikeable characters from SNL (who, mind you, mocks Catholics) that most folks under 30 wouldn’t recognize. “Mary Katherine”‘s message was to vote for Harris because she’s a girl.
Harris really sent a cringe-worthy campaign ad instead of something funny and relatable to Catholics. What a joke.
