High pitched, extended vowels and incredibly articulated: so-called 'gay voice' is a real phenomenon, researchers say.
Two science YouTubers have scoured studies behind the theory that homosexual men have a unique twang that transcends aspects like culture and upbringing.
Mitch Moffit, a biologist, and Greg Brown, a science teacher — who are both gay — explored what exactly constitutes a 'gay voice' and what might cause it...
They found that analysis comparing the pitch of straight and homosexual men's voices found key differences in how they speak.
Mr Moffit explained: 'Results find that gay men speak with higher pitch variation meaning that their range from low to high is much more extreme than straight men.'
Mr Brown added: 'Gay men were also found to have longer vowel durations for "a", "i", and "u" — they hold these vowels longer in general when they speak compared to straight men.'
One interesting aspect of these pitch analyses was that the results weren't language specific and were replicated across English, French and Dutch.
'The gay voice expands beyond language and isn't just the words or culture we engage in,' Mr Moffit said.
Mr Brown also highlighted a specific way the 's' sound seemed to be spoken amongst gay men.
'Gay men are also more likely to hold their s sound for longer than straight people,' he said.
He highlighted how this is contrary to the so-called 'gay lisp', a perceived quality of gay men's speech where they misarticulate the 's' sound as 'th'.
Studies, however, have shown homosexual men don't have an increased rate of lisps than their straight counterparts.
But one key observed difference between the sexualities was that straight men are more likely to mumble and slur their words compared to gay men who were more articulate.

Part of it is signalling to each other among the straights without attracting too much attention. Frank Zappa’s song “Bobby Brown Goes Down” has a line, “I jingle my change but I’m still kinda’ cute. Got a job doing radio promo, and none of the jocks can even tell I’m a homo.” On the other hand black homosexuals like to swirl their braids on top of their heads like a flashing sign.
There’s the macho types as mentioned above and then the flits. Hard to believe they were “born that way” when they can adjust their behavior to match a setting.
I’ve run out of several restrooms upon hearing their “dates” going on in stalls. Family restaurants, hospitals - they don’t care where. Why they gravitate to waiting tables for employment mystifies me. I prefer a straight person who’s not as likely to have disease-harboring fluids on their hands.
We definitely screwed up allowing the gay marriage thing. Remember the days when one could watch an hour of television without seeing a gay couple in a show or in an ad? “We just want benefits other couples get” has devolved to freaky parades in front of small children and “Drag Queen Story Hours”. Must be a lot of clowns out of work now.
Using God’s symbol for hope, the rainbow, as their personal mascot offends me almost as much as using the word “Pride” in place of “Shame”. Back into closets or discount tickets to Arab countries for the lot of them. They’ve got a bungee jumping game over there where they skip using the giant rubber band.

I knew a pair once. One was perfectly normal acting, including his voice and mannerisms. The one he lived with had the voice and mannerisms of a queer. I’m guessing the normal acting one played the part of the dominant male and the other played the part of the wife.
I think he had acquired it from older gay actors who he knew, and who he knew were gay.

This is the stupidest article that I’ve read in a long time. If there is a “gay voice”, its because certain gay men learn to talk that way. Its a learned behavior, not something genetic. Its a symbol of cultural solidarity. Like drag queens - they have a certain way of talking. Is there something genetic about that?

I’ve found that most homosexuals I’ve known address their moms as “mother.”
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
