Ethel Kennedy, human rights advocate and widow of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, died on Thursday after suffering a stroke last week and being hospitalized. She was 96.
Her death was announced by her grandson Joe Kennedy III in a post on X.
“It is with our hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother, Ethel Kennedy. She died this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week. Along with a lifetime’s work in social justice and human rights, our mother leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom love her dearly,” said the former Massachusetts Congressman.

Wasn’t she the lobotomizer?
Ethel Kennedy (née Skakel)....................
No.
I believe that was Joseph and Rose Kennedy (JFK/RFK/Teddy’s) father and mother who had one of their daughters lobotomized. In its day it was “science.”
Did her side of the family spawn Patty Bowman’s Palm Beach rapist as well?
She put up with her husband’s multiple affairs to keep that Kennedy name and to have people call her a “human rights advocate” (which only wives of rich men get called when they die). May she rest in peace but I’m not going to join in the praises of her as some great social activist.
If she ‘put up’ with affairs it was more likely because she was a devout Catholic with a lot of kids to be concerned about.
RIP. 96 a great run. A celebration more than a mourning. She saw too many family tragedies. In another vein though the wake and funeral and funeral lunch should be interesting.
Probably another invalid reason they will drop the flags to half-mast.
RIP.
Do she disavow RFKJ?
Do she disavow RFKJ?
RIP
Didn’t know alive.
Neither would I as a Kennedy. There is too much praise of Kennedys on the right side now.
Not that I actually know that much about them. But enough to be dangerous!
I will only be blessed to live that long. I’m ‘only’ 70 and starting to come apart.
Regardless of politics and all that, may she rest in peace.
Back in 1964, I was a junior in high school in Rochester, NY. RFK and Ethel, who was pregnant at the time, accompanied LBJ, and did a stop at the Rochester airport. We skipped school to go. RFK and LBJ spoke. At the end of the event, I filed past and got to shake hands with Ethel, who was wearing a pair of white cotton gloves. I did take my camera but was so far back in the crowd, that LBJ and RFK look very small. Ethel must have been pregnant with Matthew Maxwell Taylor Kennedy who was born January 11, 1965.
Great story. Thanks for sharing
she was always centered more on family than politics and not one to speak out on most issues. she was always unbelievably devoted to her husband and his memory, no matter what, and also to her Catholicism. we haven’t heard much about her for some time so she may have declined. i have no recollection of her being part of the Kennedy “get RFKJr” group.
