The Federal Aviation Administration issued a safety alert to airlines regarding Boeing 737 airplanes equipped with certain rudder components.
The air-safety regulator said Tuesday the operators of Boeing 737 NG and 737 MAX airplanes with SVO-730 rudder rollout guidance actuators should instruct flight crews that the rudder control system could potentially become jammed or restricted in flight or during landing.
Boeing said in a statement it has reminded operators of the proper actions that flight crews should take if they encounter rudder restriction, and has also shared technical guidance from its supplier.

A rudder hard-over is one of the most dangerous things that can happen in the air. It has caused many disastrous crashes in the past. I'd be extremely nervous if I was boarding a 737 after hearing this.

“Can’t believe there’s another rudder issue with the 737 after 30 years ago. 2 complete aircraft lost and nearly a 3rd.”
What was the 3rd?

I just remember during that time there was another 737 that almost crashed for the same reason, but the crew got control of the plane in time.

This is a ROLL-OUT guidance system. Does not actuate in flight. It “stuck” in position.

They knew enough to deactivate trim system. Details are lost somewhere in my brain.
I think an event occurred to the previous crew of the Asian one that crashed.

The article states it can happen in flight also. Not just during a rollout. If it is a hard-over situation then it could kill everyone even on a high speed rollout anyway.

I wonder if airlines are having customers switch to a different carrier if a Boeing is on the menu?
Normally I don’t care what brand of plane, but one with a potential rudder hard over would bother me.

“I thought they had fixed this.”.
The issue has been known for a few months. Finally got the safety alert out. United only US carrier involved. Nine planes.

By the time the exit door blows open in flight and the plane tries to skid to a hard landing on a foam filled runway with waiting fire trucks on either side and with two tires already dropped off, you won’t even remember the rudder problem.

I thought they had fixed this. They did, a long time ago. This must be a new issue causing the same type of effect.

Illustration....
Would make it difficult for a pilot like the George Kennedy one in the Concorde Airport ‘79 movie who had to use his old fighter pilot’s training to maneuver the passenger jet to avoid a heat seeking missiles.

It sounds like you are recalling the details of the 737 MAX crashes, but those were not caused by rudder malfunction.
