Israel not expected to attack Iran nuclear facilities, to focus on bases, intelligence sites - NYT claims -

Israel's response to Iran's missile barrage attack at the beginning of October will not be attacking its nuclear facilities but rather targeting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps's military bases and intelligence sites, according to a Monday report from the New York Times citing officials.

The report said while Israel would prefer to have US backing in its response, Biden and other US officials have said that strikes on nuclear facilities would be ineffective and "plunge the region into a full-scale war," the report said. However, the nuclear facilities as targets may come into consideration should Iran escalate with attacks of their own. Both former and senior Israeli officials have

The Times also reported Pentagon officials wondering whether Israel is preparing a retaliatory response against Iran alone. The report also cited former and current senior Israeli officials who acknowledged doubts about whether Israel can actually cause damage to Iran's nuclear facilities.

The Times report also claims a "rising call" in Israel where the country has the opportunity to set back Iranian capability in the region by a few years. Former US President Donald Trump said in a speech that Israel should “hit the nuclear first and worry about the rest later.” It also mentioned should tensions escalate between the two countries, one likely target for Israel's response would be Iran's Natanz nuclear enrichment plant, and reported that Israel already has developed plans in how to "cripple the giant centrifuge hall."

The Times stated that the enrichment plant has been the focus of Israel's and the US's attention for around 22 years.

This report is very much FWIW. I think Israel will hit Iran’s oil export terminals (a warning) a bit in addition to what Jerusalem Post says. I think no bombing of Iran’s nuclear enrichment. This is for next time.

For those who do not know..... Israeli warplanes will need to bring re-fueling tankers. They cannot make it to Iran and back on their own. Israeli F-35s might be the exceptions>>>>>

Claimed Capability
The Israeli Air Force (IAF) has reportedly made modifications to its F-35I Adir fighters that would allow them to attack Iranian targets without the need for in-flight refueling12. This development is said to boost the IAF’s capabilities for long-range precision strikes.

Possible Methods
While specific details are not provided, there are a few potential ways this extended range could have been achieved:
Stealthy external fuel tanks: The IAF may have developed low radar cross-section (RCS) external fuel tanks that don’t significantly increase the aircraft’s radar signature1.

Conformal fuel tanks: These could be attached to the F-35I fuselage, similar to those used on F-15E or F-16C/D aircraft1.
Engine modifications: The Pratt & Whitney F135 engine might have been tweaked to consume less fuel in certain flight regimes1.
New drop tanks: Reports from 2021 mentioned the development of 600-gallon drop tanks that could increase the F-35I’s total fuel capacity by approximately 40%2

“the strange, calculated, and negotiated multi-party dance of proxy warfare.”

Israel got caught flatfooted Oct 7 last year but their overall capabilities have been proven to be very good.

Israel certainly has a hankering to clobber Iranian nuclear facilities and the two missile attacks provide adequate justification.

They (Israel) may postpone the "disproportional" attack one more time for any number of reasons: waiting for Trump to reenter the White House or finding their existing two-war front quite enough to handle at the moment.

Another possibility for delaying the disproportional attack on Iran; Biden's willingness to give Israel something big for doing the dems an election-year favor.

It may make sense for Israel to hold their horses in exchange for another 20 or 30 F-35s and a boatload of 2,000 pound bombs. Plus who knows what.

Start knocking off the command structure of Iran’s secret police, so they can’t suppress the people. Let the people handle it.

Hey, wouldn’t it be funny if Iran bought their nuke detonators from the same company that made the pagers and radios for hezbollah?

You are correct, they may make that decision. And it might be a good decision for them, or it may be a bad decision. If it is a good decision, they will benefit in that if the Dems hold on to power, they’ll have some cachet remaining for a time. If it is a bad decision, it will be devastating. To the point that there will be an immediate existential situation.

I guess it comes down to…do you feel lucky?

Tough call for Israel. Do they wait for Iran to nuke Tel Aviv or prevent it? Hmmmm....

Always take out the troops to demoralize the regime. But if a few stray bombs hit a nuke facility or a palace, oops.

It would be a shame if the computers used in Irans nuclear facilities were purchased from an Israeli shell company.
