More than 1,000 active-duty soldiers deployed to the southeast to help thousands of National Guard troops as the death toll from the storm rises.

More than 1,000 active-duty soldiers with the 101st and 82nd airborne divisions are on the ground and in the skies above North Carolina, working to help local National Guard units and emergency responders aid communities impacted by Hurricane Helene.

As of the weekend, more than 7,000 service members from the United States Army and the National Guard are active across the southeast. The National Guard units from 16 states were joined by active-duty soldiers mobilized by the XVIII Airborne Corps, with the express mission of “reaching the hardest hit areas as quickly as possible,” the Department of Defense said.

Roughly 500 soldiers with the 20th Engineer Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps and the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division left Fort Liberty on Oct. 3 for Asheville, the largest city in western North Carolina and part of Buncombe County, one of the most damaged parts of the country by Helene. They are conducting inspections of the roads in the region, as well as clearing debris and transporting supplies. Several aircraft were deployed with them for the mission.

They didn’t want to go until President Trump threatened to rename their base Fort Bragg again.

The feds only had to be shamed into it. Uh oh. If we let bodies rot in the street and citizens starve to death because the bridges are out and roads blocked or gone, and it gets widely known—GASP! ORGAN CHORD! Less people will vote for us. Donald Trump and Elon Musk are making us look bad. NOOOOOOO! So they finally stop pretending to help and send real help. What they should have done day one.

The main story at the link, which said Katrina changed the way the military responded to disasters, has been archived and the wayback machine can't find it either. But this chart said there were 60,000 military forces on the ground by September 7th, which was 8 days after Katrina.

Not troops fault they're late

Nobody gave the orders to move until almost a week after the event

Compare this to Katrina and Hurricane Andrew in 92 (I was there for that one). We got there a lot quicker

Just gross incompetence on the part of the Biden-Harris Administration and FEMA

“Just gross incompetence on the part of the Biden-Harris Administration and FEMA”

Not incompetence. Purposeful malice. An easy way to annihilate thousands of Christian MAGA voters in the South. “Never let a good crisis go to waste “

Re: Fight tonight.

Well, I’m guessing they ARE and they weren’t called up until very recently - when Harris/Biden started catching flak for not giving a crap about NC when compared to their precious ‘protected immigrants’ and the other illegals.

Deploying a mere 1,000 troops after more than a week is a studied insult to the survivors.

All of this is intentional.

++++++++++++

This is akin to calling 911 after the house has burned down and killed the inhabitants. 100% intentional.

DeSantis sent part of his NG to NC.

Where did other governors send theirs?

“You have no knowledge of how the 82nd or 101st deploys. For the 82nd, the requirement is to have at minimum a company of troops wheels up in 18 hours or less. And this ONLY applies to the Infantry Brigade Combat Teams (IBCTs). The 101st will take longer to deploy due to their composition.”

I guess “fight tonight” is just another recruitment slogan. It sounded good to my ears.

Not to put too fine a point on it but does it take just as long to get into trucks and deploy a couple of hundred miles (no combat expected) as it does to load airplanes and fly for a (combat) deployment to Europe?

They won't be parachuting into North Carolina will they?

Florida had their state guard on the ground in North Carolina days ago

They should have been deployed within 48 hours. The government knew how bad this storm would be. It wasn't a surprise. A little pre planning goes a long way when disaster strikes. I wouldn't trust fema to make coffee nevermind help in a disaster. They are more worried about trans illegals than Americans in need. Biden Hairass Americans Last.

Which already exceeds the official death toll from Hurricane Katrina.

Both counts are low, in my opinion. The government does not really want to know the numbers as it just makes them look bad.

What search efforts have been made have not been for bodies. They have quite properly focused the people they have available on finding survivors. I can understand that they must work with what they have.

They did not have and still do not have enough capable people on the ground conducting search and rescue efforts.

I am going with the "Flynn" estimate. Take the number you have and append a zero to it for the final count. I make that at 2,800 dead.

A majority of the deaths will be from exposure, dysentery, dehydration and injuries suffered while attempting to walk out of remote areas.
