Deadly flooding from Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina has also disrupted the underground nests of yellow jackets, bees and other insects, causing them to swarm and sting people struggling to recover from the storm.
It's caused such a surge in requests for medication to protect people allergic to stings that the the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is buying Benadryl and epinephrine injections to help fill requests through hospitals, emergency medical personnel and doctors. And the humanitarian aid group Direct Relief says it has sent more than 2,000 EpiPen injections to community health centers, clinics and pharmacies across western North Carolina.
“With every disaster, we get requests for EpiPens but this one is definitely an outlier,” said Alycia Clark, Direct Relief's chief pharmacy officer. Many of the people coming in with stings are electricians working to restore powerlines and other outdoor workers, Clark said.
Pharmacists in the state can also provide emergency refills for people who are already prescribed allergy medications, according to a state health department spokesperson. The state is planning to allow people to buy epinephrine injections such as EpiPens without a prescription, and it is working to collect and distribute donations of medicines.
While most people are not allergic to stings from bees and other insects, irritation and pain can be intense and stings can swell and remain painful for days, according to the Mayo Clinic. And some people can have a severe allergic reaction that can lead to anaphylaxis that can cause difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue and throat, weak pulse and loss of consciousness. In these situations, it's critical to administer epinephrine immediately.

A vital element in BCP is stashing supplies in the likely impacted areas ahead of time. Heck, the govt tells us Little People all the time to prep and buy water, canned goods, toilet paper etc. before a storm.
I don’t deny that Helene was a tail risk event. But the absence of ANYTHING being stashed by the Admin - including supplies like this - is a total failure.

I’m not keen in NC’s gov, but he did warn folks about catastrophic flooding.
That said, people need to stop depending on government to save them from their own foolishness.
Deep State doesn’t give a rat’s patootie.
One of the eeriest sights I ever saw was all the creeping creatures trying to climb out of a flood - the bridge rails, the tree trunks, the weeds, were covered by insects, spiders, centipedes, pillbugs, daddy long legs, crowding closer, crawling upon each other, glistening in the headlights, as the water rose.
Building on a mountainside or ten feet above the flood plain is foolishness then.
Taking to the roads during a deluge, greater foolishness.
Find yourself a gently rounded knoll, and pray.
Yellow Jacket Wasps: The original Yellow Vest warriors!
“Sacred Bleu, this sting is for you!”
Stash the Pepcid AC to give the Benadryl a boost, and you might not need that epi pen.
I carry famotidine/Benadryl with me, as well as the epipen, to try first, and it has worked very well both times I’ve taken it. I am allergic to yellow jackets and wasps.
They’ll let you into the private After-Party.
Just tell them “Buzzy” sent you.
“Just tell them “Buzzy” sent you.”
I did not tell anyone they can attend my private after party. But if you show up at the door, the password is “FReeper.”
There ya go, FEMA’s excuse for doing nothing but hanging out at the hotel pool. They can’t risk gov employees getting stung.
” the underground nests of yellow jackets,”
Clearing some brush as a youngster, I ran over a yellow jacket nest with the mower ...
Pretty sure NONE of this was “FLOOD PLAIN”.
Got you beat. When I was 6 years old I was walking in my grandmoms strawberry patch barefoot and stepped on a ground wasp nest. My grands made a poltise and wrapped up my foot. Next day, I was walking on the arch of my foot.
Yellowjackets: jerks of the bee world.
Pass the word!
Yep. About 20 years ago I ran into a yellow jacket nest while weed eating some ivy on a slope near the road in my front yard. I got stung maybe 7 or 8 times. No problem, I’m not allergic, and the pain was pretty mild, less than from a wasp.
Yellow jackets return to the nest at dusk. I went back out as it was getting dark and spotted them flying into the entrance to the nest in the hard clay. I waited until near dark and sprayed wasp & hornet killer into the hole, no more yellow jackets. Just to be clear, this was the can that shoots a long stream. I stood a few feet away and had no problems.
I test-fired a new shotgun into a ground nest of some fairly nasty hornets. They had set up shop right by my favorite archery backstop. Very effective.
