‘Strongest of its kind’ flare may cause blackouts, massive solar storm on Earth

October is off to a hot start: The sun unleashed a massive X-class solar flare — the “strongest of its kind,” according to Space.com — that has the potential to pummel our planet with a powerful geomagnetic storm this week.

The supercharged sunburst erupted from sunspot AR3842 on Tuesday evening.

It clocked in at X7.1, making it the second most powerful in the last seven years after the monster X8.7 magnitude in May, Live Science reported.

This also triggered a coronal mass ejection (CME) — when plasma and magnetic particles burst forth from the sun’s surface — which is slated to strike the Earth on Friday at around 4 p.m., according to Spaceweather.com.

When this occurs, meteorologists predict it will penetrate the Earth’s magnetic field, triggering a strong “G3-class geomagnetic storm” — the third most powerful category after the G4 and G5.

These phenomena have the potential to impact navigation systems, power grids and even satellite communications, Space.com reported.

They also supercharge aurora displays, often causing these natural light shows to be observed far further south than is typical.

The flare was one of two that erupted from sunspot AR3842 fired this week.

The other was an M-class flare — the second most powerful class — on Monday evening.

Interesting... Short story here ... I was a Huey crewchief in the cal guard. I was told this story by a pilot I knew. They were flying a high altitude training mission in the serrias like 10-12000. And they were trying to check in with base ops called “Shark ops”. They were going through the radios... Vhf, FM, and UHF. I don’t know which radio it was but they finally got a reply from Shark ops.. they didn’t recognize each other... Turns out they got Shark ops on The same freq as Fresno, but we’re talking an ops at fort Rucker Alabama.. like 2000 miles away. Loud and clear. Crazy

The change in frequency of the light (emitted radiation) has, but the CME's are MASS EJECTION of MATTER and Matter does not travel at the speed of light.

It's like hearing an explosion, and then being pelted by the debris a few seconds later. IF matter went the speed of light, it would turn into energy.

I had heard about the X9 but only saw reports of an X7.
Then I check spaceweather and started laughing because apparently I had heard two different reports out of order.
Weather report here is inconclusive on cloud cover.

I follow this doctor and her team. She actually gives you weather reports months or weeks in advance on the calendar.

Her previous video was providing weather for a peroid in December 2024.

When I was a working in total communications (Sat, Long Haul coms, radio, telephone, cloud, WWW etc.), the government website on Radio was changed under Obama the first few weeks of his administration - they wiped all reference to the Sun in Radio communications. At the time I thought it was obvious but by removing any reference to solar flares or Sun activity from Radio at the National level - essentially everyone who learned Radio communictions would do so without understanding why they were seeing outages.

This week, our Sun wakes up in a big way, firing multiple big flares, including an X9-flare from Region 3842, the largest flare yet of this solar cycle. This region began its rampage as it entered the Earth-strike zone and has now launched two big, Earth-directed solar storms. Along with some smaller storms sandwiched in between the large, faster storms, this solar storm train is set to begin hitting Earth on October 4. The speed estimate for the initial impact has a larger margin of error than usual, due to a sparsity of coronagraph observations during the eruption so the storm arrival window stretches clear to the morning hours of October 5.
We are expecting G3 levels during the peak of the storm, so aurora photographers should get a good chance for some nice shows from October 4 through at least October 6. Sadly, this heightened activity complicates the ongoing Hurricane Helene emergency response. Amateur radio operators, please be aware that dayside communications will be noisy this week and be subject to periodic radio blackouts up to the high R3-level. (We nearly had an R4-level blackout today.) Nightside communication will be difficult during the multi-storm passage on October 4 - 6, but then should improve slowly after that. GPS and UAV Search and Rescue responders should also stay vigilant this week as GPS reception will likely worsen around dawn and dusk and likely on the nightside while the storms are passing. When the media is over hyping a solar flare, I go to this guy and he puts it in perspective. The guy who runs this website also believes climate change data is mainly garbage and temperature variations are driven by the sun, not human activity. He also posted a picture of himself at one point in t-shirt stating the 2020 election was fraudulent. Appears to be one of us.

We now have a second flare on the tail of this first one, so it might get interesting.
