Mayor of California Charter City Defies Newsom's Ban on Voter ID Laws 'That Law Does Not Apply to Us'
Western Journal ^ | October 1, 2024 | Jared Harris

A California mayor is defiant after Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law in direct response to the city’s attempt to secure elections.

The saga began on March 5, when Huntington Beach voters weighed in and passed ballot measure 1, the Voter ID and Election Rules Amendment.

According to Ballotpedia, the charter amendment authorized the city to require voter identification for elections and allowed infrastructure to support the initiative.

...

In 2023, then-Mayor Tony Strickland supported the measure in the face of pressure from local and state Democrats seeking to torpedo it.

“Our democracy does not work if people do not have faith in the election results,” Strickland told Voice of OC. “Anytime you can put safeguards in I think it’s important to do so people have faith in our election outcomes.”

...

Huntington Beach voters passed the measure with 53.4 percent approving the measure and 46.6 percent rejecting it. The increased election security was set to begin in 2026.

After the initiative passed, state legislators were quick to react to Huntington Beach voter’s approval of the measure and moved to crush it entirely.

...

Unfortunately for Newsom and Co., current Huntington Beach Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark isn’t about to quietly let Sacramento dictate the future of her city.

...

The state cannot pass any laws that strip us of our constitutional rights,” Van Der Mark told LAist, “so that law does not apply to us or affect our new election laws.”

Good on you mayor. Sadly, you’re about to find out who is in charge.

Pretty much every country in the world including Canada, the UK, Australia, India, etc... Requires identification to vote. Why in the world would the worlds most identifiable free nation on earth, not require and I.D. to vote with? It’s inanity.

Intentional... Democrat elites oppose voter ID, citizenship verification, and such because they rely on election fraud to win..

They know that their policies are not popular.

Then again, maybe California is about to find out that, in the end, the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land.

Minorities are offended that officials think they don’t have proper ID or they can’t get it. This is simply a Democrat talking point to get illegals into the voting pool. I wonder how quickly they’d change their stance if illegals start voting Republican. My guess is the change would be so fast that the speed of light would look slow by comparison...

I love what the mayor is doing, but don’t be surprised if the DOJ just happens to find kiddie porn on his phone.

“in the end, the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land.”

Well..... I’m still waiting for the end. Meanwhile I’ll keep shelling out for tax stamps, being equitized, asking permission for almost everything, and watching illegals vote. Hopefully I’m still around to see the end.

Newsom already had a beef with Huntington Beach, mandating that they add thousands and thousands of apartments to their small city, including a lot of “affordable” housing in a area that is already built out. Newsom said he’d “see them in court.”

Newsom is hell bent on making sure no ID is needed to vote in any election - clearing the way for millions of illegals to vote. He wants to make sure the state stays solid, solid blue.

So, ignore Newsome and get the votes nullified. Take it to the courts and let the USSC settle this $hit once and for all.

“Aren’t a lot of cities “charter” cities?”

In California, many are. 121.

https://www.cacities.org/UploadedFiles/LeagueInternet/6b/6bbb4ee3-88f9-4d8f-93ad-0075a7b486c4.pdf

As a result, more people live in charter cities (18.9 million, 58% of the population residing in cities) than general law cities (13.8 million, 42%). If you tack these numbers on to the rest of the state, it will probably end up around half of the voting base for California at a guess. Many rural people do not live in towns or cities so they have to be factored in. And that would be a guess but the agricultural people in California do not agree most of the time with Sacramento. And there are a lot of them in an agricultural driven state.

Voter ID is irrelevant here in CaCaLand. So long as any form of mailin ballots (not absentee — those are verified with ID) are allowed all elections are dishonest.
In the attempted recall of this arshole Guv’na the week of the election a convicted felon was found passed out (on drugs) in his car in Frisco. Beside him he had a loaded gun (twice illegal, can’t have one as a felon and a loaded gun in a car is illegal unless locked up), a bag of drugs, and 300 mailin ballots. He was released that day on own recognizance.
Once in the WHouse he will ensure that the US will never have another honest election in any jurisdiction. That is the goal of those who own him.
