Dig Deeper Department of Veterans Affairs employees have illicitly accessed the medical records both major parties' vice presidential nominees, the agency confirmed to both campaigns. An investigation is ongoing.
At least 12 agency employees have improperly accessed the records of Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, and Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., according the Washington Post. Both men are veterans of the armed services, with Vance serving in the Marines and Walz in the National Guard.
“We take the privacy of the Veterans we serve very seriously and have strict policies in place to protect their records,” VA press secretary Terrence Hayes told the outlet. “Any attempt to improperly access Veteran records by VA personnel is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
The agency has also provided evidence to the Department of Justice, which is weighing charges.
The motives of the employees who viewed the records have not been identified as of press time. The VA has since reiterated to employees that they may only access veteran information as part of their official duties and could face dismissal for violations.

Two of my uncles were wounded in WWII...and their wounds, battles, hospital stays are all in the old newspapers.
If I had to guess, I’d say they were looking for dirt on Vance. And they knew that it would look bad if that (and only that) came to light. So they also accessed records on Walz. Not that they cared. But if the two-pronged research came to light (as it did) then the whole thing is less clearly a Harris operation.
Unusual story.
If they were getting VA medical care, then yes, the records are there. Their active duty medical records are NOT there. They are archived at a different agency.
If either man applied for compensation derived from long term injury that started on active duty, then the VA will request the active duty records. But not unless.
This entire matter would apply only to medical care rec’d at VA facilities. It is possible they both make use of VA medical care, but a little surprising, given they had access to other medical care funded by their companies or govts.
Morons who don’t understand how medical records work. I was amazed at the “logging tracking” that was available on medical records when I worked at a hospital. I could tell when a telephone operator looked up whether or not a patient was in the hospital and whether or not the patient wanted to be “on the census” or if they wanted to remain private.
That was nothing compared to every “touch” by a nurse/doc.
Every employee needs to take a HIPPA test every year. And browsing through accounts is specifically addressed in our tests.
These people are just plain stupid. They should lose their jobs and pensions. Th VA does not need morons working for them.
HIPPA did not exist back then.

They actually dismissed an employee and the boss resigned after his records were illegally accessed.
That was then, this is now, and nobody knows anything anymore.

Clarification.
Veterans make use of VA healthcare even if they have other healthcare access. It’s free, and if they have even a mild service connected injury (disability), then there is no income threshold for getting that care.
Most cases I have heard where vets choose not to use the VA is when they live too far away from a VA hospital. Otherwise, the VA is very, very military tailored. That is why guys choose it.
I happened to hear the questions asked a guy about to get an MRI.
Do you have any metal in your body? Like pins for broken bones. The guy said nah, nothing like that. But they persisted. What about a wound? Any remaining shrapnel that doesn’t bother you and you didn’t have removed? Oh! Yeah, a small thing here near my elbow. Got too close to an RPG in Saigon. It’s nothing. If not for that extra, persistent question, they would have ripped up his elbow with the magnets.
But yeah, hard to imagine what records these people were trying to access.
Firing people in the government can be messy business. It can lead to all kinds of unwanted “blowback” for the agency and its managers. So best not to stir up things up that cannot be controlled.
Not condoning this, just giving reasons why there’s great reluctance to hold anyone accountable. The Swamp prefers stagnant waters.

Annoying. My sister has access to these records and snoops on me.
Really annoying. I am loathe to get her fired, but it’s crossed my mind. There’s nothing to see. She’s just a nosy witch. She stayed at my house once, so I put a lock on my office door, knowing she would try to snoop. She was dumb enough to ask me why I have a lock on the door. (You’d never know unless you tried to open it.)
You can ask your doc who has pulled your records. There is a a log right there.
