With nuclear option unlikely, Putin struggles to defend his red lines
The Washington Post ^ | September 22, 2024 | Catherine Belton and Robyn Dixon

When Russian President Vladimir Putin warned earlier this month that Western approval for Ukraine to strike deep inside Russia would mean Moscow was at war with NATO, Russian propagandists rushed to rattle the nuclear saber.

Alexander Mikhailov, director of the Bureau of Military Political Analysis, called for bombing plywood mock-ups of London and Washington — complete with reproductions of Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the White House — to simulate nuclear strikes, so that they would “burn so beautifully that it will horrify the world.”

The speaker of the lower house, Vyacheslav Volodin, warned that strikes on Russia would lead to war with nuclear weapons and reminded the European Parliament that its headquarters in Strasbourg was only a three-minute flight for a Russian ICBM.

But inside the Kremlin, there is a growing recognition that the repeated use of the nuclear threat is starting to lose its potency and Moscow’s red lines are constantly being crossed. Analysts and officials close to senior Russian diplomats said instead that Putin is casting around for a more nuanced and limited response to the West allowing Ukraine to use longer range missiles to strike Russia.

“There has been an overflow of nuclear threats,” said a Russian official speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. “There is already immunity to such statements, and they don’t frighten anyone.”

Putin seems to have cried "NUKE" one too many times.

Meanwhile...

Humiliation for Putin as 'unstoppable' Satan-2 missile explodes, obliterating Russia's only test site for the hypersonic weapon - potentially delaying the project for YEARS

Russia is the LAST nation that should be talking about nuke use.

It is cold, very limited transportation networks, limited fuel resources, minimal rail networks and anemic agricultural production.

Famine comes to Russia w/o nuclear war. Much worse with it.

An abysmally bad Russian leader. The worst.

Like H, he lives in madness and fantasies of an empire restored

Well,go ahead and strike Russia and see what happens. Playing nuclear poker is so much fun. So the odds may very well be that Putin bluffs but who in their right mind provokes any chance that he very well may just send a limited nuclear response? WTF is NATO and the US going to do to that? Will it be worth a global nuclear war? To save Biden’s legacy and Zelensky’s war is not worth anything let alone further and expanded war.

The fact that they’re using the term unlikely versus unthinkable is disturbing in itself

Oh, please. WaPo and other liberal rags make it seem like Putin is on his last legs. Nothing could be further from the truth, and I say this as a staunch opponent to Putin.

Russia has 12 time zones.
USA has 4 including Hawaii.
Europe is so densely populated, most Euro’s live in multi-family buildings.

One does not have to be a rocket engineer to figure out who is more vulnerable in a nuclear war.

A total nuclear exchange will effectively destroy both countries, us and Russia, in 30 minutes’ time.
It will take 100 years to recover if that’s even possible. A half-billion people will die either from the initial blasts or from radiation and starvation. Back to the Stone Age basically.

go ahead and strike Russia and see what happens.

Its been happening for over a year now, two if you count sinking the Black Sea fleet. So far, just a lot of huffin and puffinn from Putin. You admire Reagan from your homepage, but you dont admire the Reagan ideals of standing up to old bear? Has nothing to do with Biden's pathetic legacy. Has little to do with Ukraine actually. It has to do with stomping Putins dick in the dirt in Ukraine before he can recover and move on to Poland or the Baltics. Putin has ambitions, and they should be squashed, otherwise the risk of a nuclear war increases.

If we have nuclear war we all lose, and Putin knows this. Nuclear war is possible only when only one side has them. If both sides have them it is s no-go for both of them.

Exactly right. Only fools think there will be a winner.

Without going nuclear, Putin still has another ramp: thermobaric weapons.

The hard part for them is getting one into a location that is important.

But it only takes one. And you can’t accuse them of going nuclear if they use it.

Guess again.

You clearly have not extrapolated this.

Area denial is not necessary or efficient with accurate targeting.

This has been known ...since the 1980s

Quite right.

Consider past wars. The experts reassured us that either war would not happen, or the time to victory would be short. The only war that worked was Reagan’s. Reagan pushed and the Soviet Union fell.

Not to worry though, Biden is in charge.
