People warned to evacuate due to dangerous chemical leak (Ohio train derailment again)

WHITEWATER TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - Hamilton County Emergency Management is advising some people in Whitewater Township to stay indoors due to a chemical leak. Update:

The leak is from a rail car in the area of US 50 and SR 128.The chemical is styrene, according to officials.

People in the area were first advised to close and seal doors and windows. Minutes later they were advised to evacuate.

I’m not aware of styrene ever being used in model glue. It wouldn’t work there. Such glues are usually different forms of acrylates.

Styrene monomer is not an imminent threat as a health hazard. I am an expert on this subject and a trained accident responder.

Outside the immediate area, the main threat would be an explosion, and that would be unlikely unless there is an external heat source, or if there was some major contaminant in the tank.

I built many a model in the 1960s using liquid glue that came in metal tube.I remember it as being styrene.Some kids deliberately sniffed it fot the effects..which I most certainly did not.
The glue now recommended or supplied with plastic models is not what we used 60 years ago.

I believe it the pressure relief valve which opened,venting vapor as designed.
