Sandwiched between the San Joaquin River and a trio of stunning national parks, the California city of Antioch seems like a peaceful part of the state's East Bay region, but in reality, it harbors an enormous underground criminal enterprise.
You'd never know it based on the wealth of the neighborhood. In fact, residents fork out 93 percent more than the national average to live in the upscale area, with the median house costing $588,000, while renters pay a median $2,850 per month, according to Fly Homes.
But the Golden State city's sunny exterior belies the shady underground weed trade that operates behind the walls of hundreds of the city's cookie-cutter homes.
Antioch Police raided around 60 alleged illegal marijuana dens over the past two years, according to NBC - and officers believe there could be hundreds more in operation.
Despite the high number of busts, only two people have been arrested and charged - and both got away with misdemeanors, thanks to California's lax laws.
While the median household income in Antioch is $90,709, some residents are making a great deal more through the shady trade.
An April drugs bust at a fancy five-bedroom, two-story Antioch home uncovered hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of illegal cannabis in the one residence alone.
Officials revealed the property belonged to an Oakland police officer - Samson Liu, 38 - who has since been placed on administrative leave.
It's unclear whether Liu lived in the home or rented it out to tenants, and no arrests have yet been made.

$588K for a house is not really upscale even outside CA.

Mom of business entrepreneur son: “Mike, you love your plants and they’re healthy but they all look alike. No variety. Can’t you put in some lilies or even some daisies and African violets or something? Add a little color. Maybe I could uproot some of these and make room. Hand me a trowel.”
It’s a grow house. Use of the word den made me think the soccer dads were going to smoke opium and drink green tea.
I don’t see the point in enforcing this. Weed is legal now. It’s just that this trade encroaches on the weed and sales tax revenues and sales/production license and permitting fees for the cities and states - which are quite high, pardon the pun. The state created a thriving black market thinking it would eliminate the black market by taxing and regulating it. The illegal dealers probably make more money now than they did before legalization since the legal market has set a pricing floor - black market growers and dealers just have to undercut the legal market by a small amount.
Nope! When someone says something about a million dollar house in CA I think burned out garage.
Antioch is no kind of upscale neighborhood. It’s a rough looking town with rough looking suburban homes
Antioch is “upscale”??
When did that happen? Pittsburg - Antioch have always been armpits. Are they now upscale armpits?
Daily Mail is obviously not familiar with Bay Area real estate prices - Antioch has been a near ghetto for decades and 588K is bottom of the barrel anywhere in the region.
California in 2024.
China says, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”
I don’t see a big deal. All that stuff is plentiful everywhere and it’s pretty cheap now...And I thought it was legal in CA?
What we do know is when the corrupt running government see someone making a some bucks on the side they’re not happy unless they get at least a 50% cut.
Some of the Black residents of Oakland have sought residence in other San Francisco Bay Area cities, such as Antioch and Pittsburg, California, and have moved to other states, largely seeking a lower cost of living.
Correct. A house a few blocks away went on the market for one million a few months ago. We went to the open house showing. It was a wreck, needed major fixing and cleaning. Messed-up roof and windows, a rotted rear deck. Original sliding garage doors that everyone else in the neighborhood replaced decades ago with automated slat-style doors, broken concrete throughout the back yard patio (with chunks of concrete everywhere), broken fences all around, a non-functional rusty motor home in the yard, and a huge secondary garage workshop falling apart. Tons of junk and car parts. It sold, and the owner spent several months emptying the junk in multiple debris boxes. Now the new owner needs to spend a few hundred thousands fixing it up. That's what a million gets you near San Francisco.
Did it sell ?
For that price?
“with the median house costing $588,000”
Upscale?/
Not an unusual occurence. 40 years ago at the height of the crack epidemic the Queens neighborhood of Woodside saw an influx of dealers. The neighborhood had many two family homes and dealers woud lease them and pay 12 months up front. Rents took off and the community board finally got the 108 to move against the dealers. Till then the Pct boss insisted drug arrests never be done by sector RMPs or even squad detectives. Only by detectives from narcotics.

$588K is a steal with all that pot in the basement!
” I don’t see the point in enforcing this.”
You stated this, and then, proceeded to explain exactly what the point is in enforcing it.
They’re horning in on the State’s business.
