The International Brotherhood of Teamsters declined to endorse a presidential candidate on Wednesday after releasing internal polling that showed a majority of its members supported former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Unfortunately, neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before Big Business,” Teamsters President Sean O’Brien said in a statement. “We sought commitments from both Trump and Harris not to interfere in critical union campaigns or core Teamsters industries – and to honor our members’ right to strike – but were unable to secure those pledges.”
Ahead of the decision, the Teamsters shared internal data showing that a majority of members supported Trump over Harris. According to an electronic member poll that was initiated after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, about 60% of members believed the union should endorse Trump while 34% supported Harris. About 6% said they supported another candidate.
“It’s a great honor. They’re not going to endorse the Democrats. That’s a big thing,” Trump said during a campaign stop in New York City on Wednesday. “Democrats automatically have the Teamsters. They took a vote, and I guess I was at 60% or more, and that’s a great honor.”
Harris met with Teamsters leaders on Monday. O’Brien had a prime-time speaking slot at this summer’s Republican National Convention but did not appear at the Democratic convention the following month. *** The last time the Teamsters sat out a presidential election was 1996. It endorsed Democratic nominees in the ensuing six elections, including Trump’s opponents Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020. The union last backed a Republican presidential candidate in 1988, with an endorsement of George H.W. Bush.

Incredible! Trump is knocking ‘em down. Teamsters president speaks at Repub convention, and now this.
Kamala is going down. (no, not that way)
I once had a job where there was a lot of Electricians Union guys. They’d crack me up around election time. The left rear bumper of their pickup had a sticker on it, “Vote Clinton/Gore” The right side had a sticker, “I’m The NRA and I Vote.” Never could “wrap my head around that.”
For 50 years or more, they have only endorsed democrats. This year they refused. Today Trump thanked them for not endorsing Kamala and freeing their members to vote however after 60% wanted Trump.
Take the assistance however. After Trump works with them, they’ll probably help us more by the midterms and 2028.
Exactly.

Bad news for the democrats.
UPS Teamster for Trump here. I believe that poll 65-35ish.
I’m getting more and more vibes of a repeat from 2016, when Trump underpolled a lot, because of all the Trump-bashing that was going on. And the bashing is even worse this time around.
I would guess that members see their bigwigs get to hobnob with the muckety-mucks and are “in” on the goodies - travel, meals, accommodations, etc.
The rank-and-file union members’ families have to deal with the financial, civil, societal, etc. realities that big government foists on them.
White working class, union workers were once the bread and butter constituency of the Democrat Party. White working people didn’t leave the Democrat Party. The party left them.
Trump 64%, Harris 34%. Teamster members are informing us they support Trump. I’m betting that this is Nov 5 vote totals.
Gee, so eloquently put.
🙄
How about the Teamsters remove this Sean O’Brien guy from the top spot?
He obviously does not represent the majority of members.
