Why Trump’s debate performance may have resonated with undecided voters

Over the past several days, the media consensus has been that a ranting Donald Trump lost Tuesday night’s presidential debate to the far more contained and cheerful Kamala Harris. Observers on both the Left and Right predicted that the former president’s outraged performance would cost him dearly with undecided and independent voters.

But that’s not what these voters are telling reporters. Several media organizations, including the New York Times, are finding the vice president left a surprising number unpersuaded. Many are declaring themselves more likely to vote for Trump. For example, 34-year-old Keilah Miller, a black woman from Wisconsin who had previously voted Democratic, told the New York Times that she was now moving toward Trump because she found him “more convincing.”

No question, Trump was angry. But so are many people. Trump’s enraged performance and the surprising reaction to it contained echoes of the ‘70s motion picture Network. In that classic satire, the recently terminated news anchor Howard Beale launches into a rambling tirade on live TV about America during the inflationary 1970s. The dysfunction he describes sounds all too familiar:

“I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth. Banks are going bust. Shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there’s no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had 15 homicides and 63....”

Immediately after the debate I thought he’d screwed up big time. I have changed my mind. Trump knows what he’s doing.

Not “May Have”..it DID. The average non-political person who isn’t a political junkie like we are, saw that Trump didn’t have his best performance while Kamala did unexpectedly adequate. However, her grating voice plus the lies, doublespeak, and word salad that has come out since then has sunk Mrs. Doug Emhoff’s campaign.

I watched a dial reaction. Independents were trending up as much as Republicans.

Harris and her debate ‘victory’ will be short-lived, her performance is being completely overrated.
Trump is taking a lot of shit for his performance, but I’ve watched the debate twice and listened to it with only audio once.

It isn’t the big win that Harris partisans think it is, and Trump wasn’t nearly as bad as it’s being made out to be.

She could crushed among independents. It’s why she wants another debate. It’s also why she suggests Trump has no plans while continuing to hide from real questions.

IMO . . . . . The only thing undecided in this election cycle is a reason to vote FOR a candidate.

President Trump is a known quantity and has a record of promises kept.


Kamala Harris on the other hand lacks substance and the American people have been inundated with massive amounts of indoctrination and repetition from the democrats.

imo, democrats that want to vote aren't sure why they should vote for Harris, AND . . . . . some, maybe many, are questioning the validity of the democrat party.

I don’t think any honest observer could re-watch and deny that Trump left lot of easy points on the table. Seriously. The opener where KH ignored the “are you better off” question and started rambling about her middle-class bona fides? He could have scored a TKO with something along the lines of, “The question was about whether the American people are better off economically under Biden-Harris. She didn’t answer the question because she can’t answer the question. Everyone, everywhere every time they go to the grocery store knows they’re worse off.”

When she started rambling about the defending the integrity of Ukrainian border, I was screaming at the TV, “PLEASE say that she defends Ukraine’s border but destroys America’s!!!”

Those are reasons I thought he’d messed up. However he actually did get those points across if you look at the total debate. The fact that people are moving toward him since the debate seems to confirm that.

The democrats know Trump hit a nerve and found common ground with Independents. That is why their talking point that last couple days is that Trump only cares about himself.

The mods were incredibly biased and the whole country saw it.

Plus - kammy got the questions in advance. She won’t hold a press conference because she can’t think on her feet.

JD Vance would of given a hurricane of a response to that first question to Harris, and would of destroyed the VP’s credibility once and for all. Yeah, that first question was easy pickings and Trump whiffed on it along with a number of other ones.

Some people say it was strategery that he didn’t give more forceful responses, but I think it’s because Trump doesn’t think like a politician and doesn’t get all the nuances of being one since he is an outsider. That said, I believe in the end Trump did enough that he will get more of the undecideds than Harris.

The best way to describe this debate is Kamala was there to troll Trump with stuff everyone in the country already knew about him. She was not there to explain who she was and what her positions were and why independents tuned in. She succeeded in trolling him but it was a victory that led to her self defeat with independents who discovered from the debate there was no there there other than a programmed troll.
