The Russian army is currently focusing all its efforts on isolating the combat area in and around Pokrovsk.

In particular, a few days ago the Russian Armed Forces took the western exits from the city under strict fire control, and now there are reports of serious damage to the bridge on the E-50 highway, which the Ukrainian army used to transfer cargo and personnel from the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk region.

As experts explain, it was along this overpass that the Armed Forces of Ukraine transferred personnel, equipment and ammunition to Pokrovsk.

The Pokrovsk transportation hub has been compromised to the point of no resupply for the city, Eastward or Northward.

Pokrovsk is toast, just like Mariupol, Bakmut, Avdivka….the bigger question is ( just announced at the NATO summit) is how will Vlad react to the UK’s decision to supply long range missiles to Ukraine to hit deep inside Russia? The US at the Ramstein summit declined to supply long range missiles. ( wise move).

Is London now also toast?

The purpose of taking Pokrovsk is to completely cut the highway and rail transportation. Effectively that has been done without actually occupying the city. Now there is even less of a rush.

The purpose of the UK missiles is to anger Putin to the point of overreaction and resulting negative publicity. The UK has a considerable number of enemies and weak points internally and worldwide. Putin may choose to help those become really sore.

Is London still a British city?

Don’t be so absurd. The mere fact that the war has gone on this long is enough to demonstrate that, despite Russia’s huge numerical advantage, the two combatants are not too badly mismatched.

The balance of equipment is shifting in Ukraine’s favor. At the beginning of the war, Ukraine was essentially stuck with old Soviet gear. Russia had her own latest. Now, the Ukrainian forces have a small amount of modern western equipment, while Russia’s losses have been so heavy that she has actually been breaking out some of her old T-55’s for combat use. Losing a third of her Black Sea fleet to a nation with essentially no navy, was a remarkable thing.

Both nations have been showing signs of serious strain for some time. The worst crack I’ve seen was the revolt of Russia’s spearhead unit. President Putin putting spymasters in command of his Kursk defenses looks like he’s flailing. Generals and spymasters don’t have the same skill set. It looks as though President Putin is calling on those he most trusts, instead of those with the skills for the job.

To suppose that Russia has already won, when she is visibly flailing, is ridiculous.

Ever since this war started, there have been no reliable assessments of what has really happened on the battlefield. The only rational conclusions are that the Russian conventional military is second rate and that the Ukrainians have fought far better and more successfully than anyone would have predicted. The war has demonstrated to military observers that the deployment of naval surface combatants and land armored vehiles must be radically rethought in this modern silicon chip based technical age.

Marioupol, Bakmut, Avdivka, next up, Petrovsk….then on to the Dniepner. Ivan doesn’t play western Shock and Awe, the Donbass is about wrapping up, his first stared goal accomplished.

The West has no stomach for Attrition…

I agree. Of course, if the nukes fly everything changes, but I think people should think about more likely scenarios.

I recommend the book “The Allure of Battle: A History of How Wars Have Been Won and Lost” by Cathal Nolan. The thesis is there is that for literally thousands of years, the West has desired a “decisive battle” because, you know, that’s how you win a war. But the author argues that battles means a lot less than most people think, and although there are exceptions, in general, the “decisive battles” haven’t decided that much.

The thing that wins wars? Attrition. Almost always. This has been true since forever.

So, to your point — the West has no stomach for attrition. We panic when we lose 5000 soldiers. But Russia? It’s pretty much the only way they fight. They are fully prepared to grind down the enemy. That’s what they always do.

We would be ground down pretty quickly.

Yes. There is quite a bit of "absurdness" going on.

And it's you! Any fool knows this is Russia vs US/NATO. They have invested $300 billion of our hard-earned money, and well over half a million Ukie lives in this massive boondoggle.

In fact, what is actually happening is the US has hired the Ukies as mercenaries to do the fighting while they supply everything but the warm bodies -- that are being fritted away in great numbers.

Oh, did I mention that the former Ukies have lost almost half of their population in this crazy mess? That could have been easily avoided except for Mr. Crazyhair Johnson sabotaging the deal less than 90 days after the start. None of this would have happened!

Yep. That's what's happening. Sure is!

Keb - you get it. Russians have not taken the bait - did not overact. Attirt attrit attrit..

Anyone educated in military science could see that the numbers will never be in Ukraine’s favor. The USSA is just callously using the Ukrainian boys as cannon fodder out of ethnic hatred. When the time comes - the USSA will ditch the Ukrainians just like in Afghanistan, Vietnam etc etc.

All of this goes back to economics - the USSA is failing because of the emerging hedonistic culture - the resulting change in economics takes only 3 generations.

I never thought I would grow old in a socialist country.

I hope the ukes can keep slowing them down with all those DJI chinese drones. I do worry about FAB-3000, TOS Heavy Flamethrower, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and Skyfall nuclear powered nuclear armed cruise missiles. I am less worried about the Poseidon nuclear powered nuclear armed tsunami causing torpedoes.

Bingo, history repeats….and the Democrat’s perpetual Russian Derangement Syndrome has become more dangerous than Senile Joe’s dangerous and ineffective Covid jabs, shut downs, mandates , masks .Do remember 75 percent of Americans bought into it.

Two things can be said, historically.

It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled.

2) To be an enemy of the US is dangerous, to be a friend is fatal.

They are fully prepared to grind down the enemy. That’s what they always do.

Baloney!

The Russians can't even win a ground war against a second rate army, and you think they have the staying power to grind down anybody? The Russians have lost over 500,000 dead and injured, and that was many months ago, and by now, it's gotta be close to a million dead and injured. And they don't have the weaponry ad/or manpower to finish the job, and their economy is no better than that of a third-world economy, and a healthy economy is essential to an extended war effort. So, no, not buying your story nor that of the book you mention..

We're in a modern warfare era, and history of the past when it comes to wars, is useless.

We would be ground down pretty quickly.

NATO and the U.S. combined, are powers at least 40 times greater, militarily and economically, than Russia. So Russia would have to win its war of attrition in about a million years. Neither you nor I will be around to see that end, and maybe Russia itself won't be around either. In any case, Russia won't win the war, no matter how many battle victories it wins here and there. Ukraine is officially defensing itself, but, the Balkan countries are also engaged and so is NATO and so is the U.S. So, Russia has an impossible mission ahead of it.

“how will Vlad react to the UK’s decision to supply long range missiles to Ukraine to hit deep inside Russia?”

Isn’t this the same Storm Shadow missiles they’ve had for a couple of years...that require US targeting support?
