Almost 40,000 people died alone in their homes in Japan during the first half of 2024, a report by the country’s police shows.
Of that number, nearly 4,000 people were discovered more than a month after they died, and 130 bodies went unmissed for a year before they were found, according to the National Police Agency.
Accounting for 7,498 of the bodies found, the dataset’s largest group belonged to 85-year-olds and above, followed by 75-79-year-olds at 5,920. People aged between 70 and 74 accounted for 5,635 of the bodies found.

National suicide.
The bill collectors should do their job and they would find them.
Honorable Hidden One.
I suspect their bills are automatically paid online.
I’ll probably suffer a similar fate, old, live alone, adult kids far away. Oh well, a new resurrected body and living with Jesus for eternity is worth it.
Amen.
Many of these elderly Japanese live in the boondocks and their children work far away in the big cities like Tokyo and Osaka and get to visit just once or possibly twice a year . A month isn’t a long time to not call one’s parents . I’d rather die at home than in a nursing home myself . My uncle in Florida died alone in the home he was renting from his brother who also lives in Florida and not far away . He was dead for a couple of weeks before he was found .
This is going to become a normal thing in the west too.
Be sure to text good morning every day to your kids when you wake up.
Since my wife passed away, I text my kids every day! They live far away.
I call myself blessed and lucky as my wife is much younger than me. I hope to expire before her. So I expect to have oversite when I deteriorate. However, I know of several times the husband was a death’s door and suddenly the wife died. I pray that does not happen to me.
i wanna die peacefully, in my sleep, like my great grandmother did- not screaming and yelling like her passengers did
Although she has family and friends nearby (and sees them frequently) I call my 88 year old mother everyday since 2011. She lives alone on a farm in a 100 + year old farmhouse, still drives (she sold her Miata 5 years ago), makes 50 baby quilts a year, keeps a 20 gauge Mossberg 500 by the front door. She will probably outlast me. :)
I know at least two people who died like that in the USA.
Both were discovered about week later.
One was sitting on the sofa, still watching TV.
Their child was too busy to call?
My sister was 10 days dead before her daughter found her in her apartment. The dead body was not even recognizable they had to do an autopsy to make sure it was my sister. What a horrible thing for my niece to go through, and the stench was unbearable.
LOL you have a remarkable mom!

The people choosing to be childless aren’t thinking about how they will spend their final years.
