A top Ukrainian pilot was killed when a US-made F-16 fighter jet crashed on Monday, a Ukrainian Defence Forces source told CNN.
The Ukrainian Defence Forces do not believe pilot error was behind the incident, the source added.
The pilot, Oleksiy Mes known as “Moonfish,” was killed in the crash while “repelling the biggest ever aerial attack” by Russia against Ukraine, said the source, adding that the pilot was buried on Thursday.

May the pilot rest in peace.
Harris and Bidenskkyyyyyyyyyy’s fault.
How about, "US jet killed by pilot" ?
no matter WHAT they tell you, operator error is the cause 95% of the time. prove me wrong.
Note to the “pilots.” Learn to fly the craft.
I comment b/c the headline indicates they blame the aircraft.
It sounds like he was shot down.
Why can’t this article say that?
A rhetorical question ?? LOL
The F-16 was supposed to be the “wonder weapon” to turn the tide of the war, I predict this won’t be the last time an F-16 crashes for unreported reasons.
If they’re going to somehow blame the US, I say we cut off all the “aid” and make em pay it back, if they’re not all speaking Russian by the end of this.
Are the ambulance chasers going to sue General Dynamics on behalf of Zelensky?
Oh Dear!
“The Ukrainian Defence Forces do not believe pilot error was behind the incident...”
“Do not believe” is not acceptable when aircrew lives have been lost.
If they’re insinuating mechanical failure was the cause they better be able to prove it.
“...killed in the crash while “repelling the biggest ever aerial attack”
Ummm, maybe the aerial attack had something to do with it. Jets have a tendency to crash and burn during such attacks, I would assign the cause of crash to the F16 being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
“Why can’t this article say that?”
You DID see the source right? 😏
“no matter WHAT they tell you, operator error is the cause 95% of the time. prove me wrong.”
Em…not in any case of Ukrainian ‘piloting’. It will always be US plane kills pilot
“The F-16 was supposed to be the “wonder weapon” to turn the tide of the war”
That claim was ridiculous of course.
Who are you saying made that claim?
“ If they’re insinuating mechanical failure was the cause they better be able to prove it.”
Ya they’ll get right on that.
It’s an imperfect world, screws fall out all the time. Move on.
RIP to this pilot and any others who lost their lives. Tragic death(s). Granted, he was so gung ho to fly — still, should he have been tasked to fly it without sufficient training?
From the CNN article posted here: “Speaking to CNN while in training, he said it was necessary for him and other Ukrainian pilots to undergo a truncated version of the training.”

“If you’re a retired F-16 pilot and you’re looking to fight for freedom, they will hire you here,” the South Carolina senator said at a press conference during his visit to Ukraine. “They’re going to look throughout NATO nations for willing fighter pilots who retired to come help them until they can get their pilots trained.”
