Michigan denies RFK Jr.’s escape from presidential ballot
Axios ^ | August 27, 2024 | Erin Doherty

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s name will still appear on the Michigan ballot despite suspending his campaign last week.

Why it matters: Kennedy said last week that he would withdraw his name from the ballot in the key swing states to avoid hurting former President Trump's chances in November.

But in Michigan, one of the states that could decide the election, it's too late for Kennedy to remove his name, per the secretary of state's office. "Minor party candidates cannot withdraw, so his name will remain on the ballot in the November election," Cheri Hardmon, senior press secretary for Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said in a statement to Axios. State of play: Kennedy, who is on the Michigan ballot as the nominee of the Natural Law Party, was nominated earlier this year.

By the same token, Shouldn't Joe Biden's name remain on the ballot, also?

Yeah, I don’t see why Biden can remove himself but Kennedy can’t.

Exactly. What is the RNC doing about that? What are Republican states doing about it?

How come they never cite the law? Just a statement by a hack saying they can’t?

They anticipated your point, that is why they said minor party candidates. Why there is a distinction between major and minor is another matter.

They covered that one with: "Minor party candidates cannot withdraw ..." And Post #2 about Democrats having their thumb on every scale is accurate.

“Yeah, I don’t see why Biden can remove himself but Kennedy can’t.”

Because they are Dems, they do what they want, and no one will stop them.

There are a few Kennedy signs in my area. I will be on the lookout to see if they change to another candidate.

I have no idea if it is actually codified in the law, but why in the world would they write a law which specifically says “Minor party candidates cannot withdraw”? What is the sense of that? And why only Minor party, not Major party? That’s crazy.

I don’t think it matters. In this day even the average moron will know he dropped out.

Major party: one that would divert lots of voters away from democrats

Minor party: one that would draw lots of voters away from republicans

Is this the definition of major and minor parties?

And I’d like to see where that is stated - that a minor party candidate can’t withdraw.

The R governor in Ohio? made the legislature change the deadline for candidates to file to be on the general ballot, so that Biden could get on the ballot even though the DNC Convention was scheduled for AFTER the deadline.

Why did they wait so long to have the convention - playing chicken with several states with earlier deadlines? The FEC says that the “Harris For President” campaign spent over $34 million (IIRC) between Jan 1, 2022 and June 30, 2024. This was when Joe Biden was supposedly already the nominee and Harris was only running to be his VP. I believe this whole stinking mess was planned well in advance so that Kamala could be installed without ever having to appear unscripted before the voting public - if the assassination attempt on Trump failed.

That they are playing hardball at best and more likely just making up legal crap should only confirm that these are lawless thugs who believe they can shaft their own voters and laugh about it. I think their voters should see how they’ve been played.

I suspect that both Jill Stein and Cornel West realize this just as RFK Jr has publicly realized it. I hope they realize how badly our country needs to unite to fight these lawless thugs. That is the biggest issue this country faces. Solve that, and you can begin working together to solve the other big issues.

Well that simply takes Dem voters away from Kamal-less who would rather vote for RFK than Kamal-less!
That may be a critical miscalculation.

The Natural Law Party wouldn’t support the withdrawal of their candidate in any case because if he comes off it weakens their chances to maintain ballot access.

Exactly!

This is just more selective enforcement of the rules to benefit one Party.

The Dems get automatic ballot access, though, is the difference. And there can’t be two candidates under the same party.

Funny how everything is always in their favor. So happy we at least got to vote for Kamala in that primary and she was vetted according to the Constitution’s rules on POTUS eligibility... uh, well, hmmm, never mind.

Agreed.... and since Rs aren’t doing anything about it, that tells me that they are thinking that way too.
