SpaceX will bring stranded Boeing Starliner crew home in February

Boeing Starliner crewmembers Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who have been stranded aboard the International Space Station since June, will remain there until February, NASA administrators announced Saturday.

In weighing whether to allow them to try to return to Earth aboard their malfunctioning Starliner craft or wait until the completion of the upcoming SpaceX Crew-9 Dragon mission in February, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the agency opted for the latter due to safety reasons.

"Butch and Suni will return with Crew-9 next February," he announced during a televised news conference at Johnson Space Center in Houston, adding that the glitchy Starliner capsule, which currently remains docked to the ISS, will be returned to Earth unmanned.

Neelson said he ultimately expects Boeing to be certified for transporting humans to ISS, which is scheduled to be deorbited in 2031 when it will be 32 years old.

The next Crew 9 mission, scheduled to launch in late September in Florida, will proceed with only two crew members rather than four, making room for Wilmore and Williams to return with it.

The capsules can seat up to seven.

Finally a definite decision. It will be SpaceX does the job.

Not until after the inauguration of the next president. Relevant?

Space-X doing the job Boeing is incapable of doing.

Must should buy Boeing and teach them how to do things.

I was thinking the same thing. However Boeing is a zombie mismanaged by leftist accountants and HR thugettes and the rot is too deep for Musk to fix easily. However Musk should start an aircraft company from scratch and her could put Boeing out of business in less than 10 years.

NASA should be totally ashamed!!!

We should all be ashamed of what we did with the country we inherited. I guess as long as there's a game on the TV, we can pretend we're the ones making those great plays, and we'll be right as rain.

Are they even up there?

As it passes overhead, it’s not like we can see them wave from the ISS window.

Boeing is a zombie mismanaged by leftist accountants and HR thugettes and the rot is too deep for Musk to fix easily.

He took over Twitter and got rid of the rot and now, it's a platform well on the way to becoming a main player in the free-speech arena. Boeing may seem hopeless, but being hopeless means that, it's bound to go under. Boeing should be a target for a better management team, and Musk knows how to do things and fix things. <

This entire mission is an embarrassment for Boeing and NASA. Not trying to minimize the difficulties of spaceflight, but the maneuvering systems since Mercury have always relied on thrusters. It’s a basic concept in spacecraft design. How Boeing could have screwed this up so spectacularly is stunning. But I’m sure a diverse slate of engineers worked on it, so it’s all good.

“NASA said Starliner’s undocking from the ISS and unpiloted return to Earth will be carried out remotely as early as Sept. 6.”

It’s likely to return successfully.

“So long as they (the Proles) continued to work and breed, their other activities were without importance. Left to themselves, like cattle turned loose upon the plains of Argentina, they had reverted to a style of life that appeared to be natural to them, a sort of ancestral pattern...Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult.”

I didn’t realize this, but former long time Florida US Senator Bill Nelson is the NASA Administrator, he was defeated for the US Senate by Rick Scott.

I’m sure they’re other reasons why NASA is so screwed up but Bill Nelson being charge is one of them.
