When is a mishap not really a mishap?
NASA has continued to twist itself into a pretzel over whether Boeing's CST-100 Starliner – now two months past its original return date – can be used to bring back its crew to Earth and whether a failure to do so would be classed as a mishap.
The briefing, which did not feature any Boeing personnel, hinted at the turmoil behind the scenes at the US space agency as staffers grapple with the problem of Starliner's problematic thrusters amid the knowledge that a proven and operational spacecraft, in the form of the Crew Dragon, could be pressed into service.
The question for engineers and managers is which option would pose less risk for the crew.
The wrangling means a decision on the transport method that the Starliner crew, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, will take for their trip back to Earth has been delayed once again, likely to the week after next.

[Starliner’s problematic thrusters]
Known before launch, but they launched anyways.
Now it’s a serious problem. Gee......what a surprise. Not.
Step two: fire any obama appointed people in NASA.
Step three: hire an actual engineer and/or astronaut to run the place.
I wonder how much of the delay in getting the Astronauts home has to do with politics and nothing to do with Astronaut safety.
Elon Musk has thumbed his nose at the US government and other Governments around the world, I’m sure he’s not well liked in the Biden Administration, they might be doing everything in their power to make sure Boeing gets the Astronauts home instead of giving SpaceX and Musk the glory of saving the Astronauts.
They don’t want to use Space X because they hate Elon Musk.
Their spacecraft has failed.
The chain of command is not functional.
They are more concerned with their own careers than the safety of the astronauts.
Having said this, if I was one of the one’s stuck in space, my next call, on open airwaves, would be to Elon.
This has now become a political hot potato. Bring hem home before the election and they are killed, it’s on Harris (she is the head of NASA as VP). Wait until after the election and, well, it’s on Harris.
Who in heck is running NASA? The Secret Service or FBI?
Get them out by September 1st? That’s an eviction notice, not the sign of a valid rescue plan.
Kicking cans down roads and spending more money is how almost all non-technical government managers solve problems. Too much physics this time for those management strategies to “work” for them. They can’t wait or spend their way out of this one. It would be fun to watch if it wasn’t for the mortal danger to the astronauts.
I think I see the holdup...
Bill Nelson, the unqualified dope of a political hack whom Biden installed as NASA administrator, must wonder if he will be remembered for simple mediocrity or for incinerating astronauts.
NASA and Boeing just need to concede it didn’t work out and get the astronauts home.
I forgot about hiding failures. That really can’t work here, either.
Paging Elon Musk. Please bring our astronauts home. So little coverage on this. Their families must be frantic.
And pronto.
Elon Musk should ride up on the SpaceX crew mission himself to rescue the Boeing astronauts.
SpaceX should run a livestream of Boeing’s stock price the whole time.
How much extra food and water are stored on the station?
I know they didn’t plan to have these houseguests for so long.
That’s August 2025.
