An emergency blood shortage has been declared in the US, with people urged to donate in order to boost supplies.
The American Red Cross said their stock of blood plummeted 25 percent in July, as extreme heat in much of the country led to fewer people turning up at donation centers.
At the same time, however, the organization said demand from hospitals has remained constant — putting a significant strain on their stockpile.

Before I moved, I gave 152 whole blood donations. I am O-. I am in my 70’s now, but still workout and don’t want the downtime for recovery.
Care to name your blood donation center? Is it national...or regional, or just one? I am looking for a conservative one in my area.
Actually, it would have the opposite effect.
Money for blood would bring in a massive influx of high-risk people looking to make a quick buck, mostly drug addicts, prostitutes, and homeless with less than stellar health hygiene. That would overwhelm the system and take away resources to use on the low-risk donors, if they can even make a reserve an appointment. A large portion of the high-risk takers would be deferred through the questionnaire, or by the judgement of the blood employee, and much of this blood would fail the tests. A lot of these high-risk donors are expert at appearing low risk while they lie about their health history. It's a professional grift.
$50 might be a lot of incentive for a homeless vagrant or other poverty-stricken groups, but $50 is not as attractive an incentive to a working, middle-class person, who will have to wade through the crowds of vagrants with all the drama that involves.
I've done it, with the plasma-selling model. It is a completely different world, if you haven't seen it. Waits are hours long. On my first visit, I was told after waiting 3 hours to go home because they overbooked and couldn't work me in for my RESERVED appointment. On my second visit, they had an issue with a previous surgery I had years ago, which wouldn't have been a problem for whole blood donation. The screening criteria are MUCH more stringent, necessarily, to donate plasma for money. I came back on another visit and eventually gave up after waiting 4 1/2 hours. My time is more valuable. The unemployed vagrants have all the time in the world to make $50.
Carter Blood Care in Fort Worth. They started in the hospital district but have branched out all over the metro area.
Awesome.
Why does my gut instinct tell me there’s more to the running out problem than lack of donors?
It’s helping people in a time of their need. I don’t give money to homeless, don’t round up for charities I don’t know or endorse; I urge you to return to donating!
“Go woke, go broke” also applies in this area.
It really is an impoverishing philosophy.
Air conditioner. This reeks of fake news. Even the buses have AC
For reasons, I currently take a blood thinner.
They will not accept blood from folks who take blood thinners.
As folks like me (a former regular donor) age into that “older demographic, we are excluded. And that may be a cause, when added to that younger demographic who just do not donate.
Certainly. It is done more often than one would think. I would simply demand it if necessary.
That’s a bummer. I read through the booklet when donating and always see that.
Red Cross is aiding and abetting illegal alien invaders as they maneuver toward our southern border.
Thx
Blood = Money, to the Red Cross.
The Red Cross is a corrupt organization.
Don’t donate to the Red Cross.
There are other, better options for donation orgs.
I recently stopped to figure out what was going on with some test results.
Might have to donate again.
“What’s the alternative?”
It is a personal decision to not donate any blood to any blood bank because I have been in that beartrap before. Others can do what they want to do.
They allow homosexuals to donate but I cannot because I was in Europe for 6 months in 1982.
No way. Go to a blood bank and they give you the covid jab.
