An emergency blood shortage has been declared in the US, with people urged to donate in order to boost supplies.
The American Red Cross said their stock of blood plummeted 25 percent in July, as extreme heat in much of the country led to fewer people turning up at donation centers.
At the same time, however, the organization said demand from hospitals has remained constant — putting a significant strain on their stockpile.

That's a bogus strategy. For one thing, it's basically impossible. Blood storage longevity is relatively short, only 42 days under optimal conditions, while you're only allowed to donate every 56 days.
And you're going to rely on your own blood being at-hand in an emergency, when you're most likely to need a transfusion? Not happening.
Blood banking is a misnomer. I usually means that you're given "credit" to use the blood at-hand when needed, not your own blood.
I try to give as much as I can - I’m a chronic anemic so it isn’t always possible.
My dad, when he was dying of acute leukemia, needed constant infusions and I always thought of those people who were kind enough to donate. We have an uncommon blood type so it wasn’t always easy for the hospital to find blood for him, they even drove long distances to pick up the blood, and I am ever thankful for that, so I try to pay it forward as much as I can.
My friend recently donated and got two free tickets to an Angels baseball game - I’ve never received a thing, so the hospitals must be getting desperate.

Apparently, Ukraine just voted to outlaw the Orthodox Church there. This would be the equivalent of the United States banning Catholicism during WW2 because Italy was controlled by the Axis Powers. Do you still think Ukraine is the good guy?

You should know that they’ve eliminated that Mad Cow disease risk requirement based now on a time frame. Most people previously disqualified because they lived in the UK can now donate.
I do bank my own blood. If the situation is an emergency whereas my blood is not available, one of my daughters or brothers with my blood type are real close by for supply.
I will not ever allow “tainted” blood to enter my body.
You must stay real close to home, then. Never travel?

There are local blood banks and hospitals can store as well pre-surgery. Fortunately, I have only had one surgery in my life and after I told my Dr. I wished to use my own blood, if needed, he arranged for the draw.
My family specifically, to a person, will not ever entertain the use of “tainted” blood.
I really soured on the Red Cross after 9/11.
Blood donor programs are the BIGGEST scams not only for the donors but for the recipients, too!

There is a very conservative, long-standing blood clinic near me. They get all of my donations. They even still retain the requirement that male donors must have never had sex with another man since 1977. They're allowed to do that.
I used to feel that way; I was close to reaching the five gallon mark.
But I am turned off by the blood banks rejecting science and making risky decisions that threatened recipients.
I have lost interest but would step up in case of a national emergency; especially if the blood banks would drop DEI.

I wrote the Red Cross and told them and their response was to delete my iPhone donor app. No one should be surprised to see what woke had done to our health care system. People suffer and die.

On a similar note, there has been platelet shortages for many years. During treatment for AML, I was stuck in my hospital bed waiting while my numbers were at 2. I was not allowed to get out of bed, as one fall could have caused unstoppable internal bleeding.
So, if any of you donate blood, perhaps consider platelets too? Thank you.

If you say compensated blood donation, you're asking for a nightmare scenario where every ho and drug addict will do everything they can to make a few quick bucks. Look at the plasma centers if you want a glimpse into this world. They are like homeless shelters.
Always thought that if they turn “donate” into “compensate” and offer $50 (or some amount greater than $20) per time, the shortage would disappear quite quickly. I’m sure when you need blood (for those with insurance) there is more than a $50 charge, probably a lot more and even the cash paying types get charged more (nothing can really come of the illegals at present for sucking away funds though). The way the gov prints billions just to piss away ($800M to bring Internet to rural communities and this administration connected zero homes or EV charging stations where DOT buttplug completed seven of a planned tens of thousands or grants to study why some part of the LGBT and rest of the alphabet people of purple haired obese lesbians are depressed) enough funds could be diverted to cover the costs of the blood compensation issues. For $50 I bet a lot of people would be happy to stop by the collection center on the way home from work every few weeks (or whatever the timeframe is between donations). Sure, more of the unqualified types would show up just for the money, but some of the funds could also go towards more screening or people have to be approved to be able to donate and only after health check could they then be on the approved list for future compensation. Of all of the things that tax money is spent on, blood shouldn’t be a hard decision. Do away with the useless department of education (since every state has their own state dept of ed) and you could probably easily cover the blood compensation program several times over. And just like that, two issues are solved.

We tried to do this, for a family member ... for a non-emergency (while in the hospital) and were told we could not do that.
I guess the trick is to contact/arrage with a willing blood bank ahead of time?
