Kursk invasion intended to create Russo-Ukrainian 'buffer zone,' Zelenskyy says

The surprise Ukrainian invasion of Russia's Kursk region is intended to create a "buffer zone" between the two countries and further complicate Moscow's cross-border offensive, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday.

"It is now our primary task in defensive operations overall to destroy as much Russian war potential as possible and conduct maximum counteroffensive actions," Zelenskyy said in his nightly address, the first public acknowledgment of the offensive's true intent.

"This includes creating a buffer zone on the aggressor’s territory – our operation in the Kursk region," Zelenskyy continued.

Ukrainian forces destroyed one bridge in the region this weekend and struck a second in a bid to disrupt Russian supply lines. Pro-Kremlin war bloggers have since acknowledged that the former strike, which targeted a bridge on the Seim River near the village of Glushkovo, Russia, was successful. The location and efficacy of the second attack were not specified as of Sunday morning.

The reported strikes' effect on Russian infrastructure further complicates a situation that has already placed Moscow on an unexpected defensive, forcing it to re-evaluate its strategy along Ukraine's northeastern border, which is a region that was largely written off as insignificant to the conflict just months after it began in 2022.

"The Ukrainian operation in Kursk Oblast [has forced] a decision-point on the Kremlin and the Russian military command about whether to view the 1,000 kilometer-long international border with northeastern Ukraine as a legitimate front line that Russia must defend," the Institute for the Study of War’s George Barros said.

"Russia has spent considerable resources to build fortifications along the international border area," Barros noted, "but has not allocated the manpower and [matériel] to significantly man and defend those fortifications."

Ukraine has claimed roughly 400 square miles of Russian territory since launching the operation on Aug. 6.

Buffer zone?

Wrong thing to say, Zelensky.

Ukraine should be taking Kursk for the purpose of creating a Ukrainian empire. After all, Russia is trying to take Ukraine and make it part of the Russian Federation or the equivalent of the old Soviet Union.

Say it’s going to be the easternmost region of Ukraine, and make Russia think hard about its invasion. Losing land is a lot more serious than taking land from its neighbors. It’s a lot more embarrassing than having to pull out of Ukraine.

Why don't zeepers ever post about the invasion on our border?

If Ukraine can hold some Russian territory, it might be a used as a bargaining chip for a status quo ante negotiated settlement.

Unfortunately, the Ukies “ offensive “ is stalled. It will go the way of their infamous failed summer offensive. It has no sustainability, supply lines cut, Russian people angered and united, thousands of Russian males now volunteering.

German tanks ( Leopards) on Russian territory a huge mistake, can you say “ Kursk II”? Kursk was a major battle that sealed the Nazis fate late in WW2, history often repeats, as we are witnessing.

In the meantime, Russia continues to make gains in every other sector on the line of contact.

Don’t take your eyes off of the ball, the Donbass is wrapping up.

Your right, the goal was to capture the Kursk nuclear power plant and use it as a bargaining chip. Instead the offensive has turned into a new killing field for Ukraine's dwindling army and western military hardware.

Unfortunately, the Ukies “ offensive “ is stalled.

That's not what I hear. The Ukies are still advancing and taking more land in Kursk. The Russians can't seem to be able to stop them, and when they try, most Russian 'defenders' die.

It will go the way of their infamous failed summer offensive.

It's not an 'offensive' if what you're doing is trying to defend what's yours. And, when it comes to battles inside your country, you will keep trying, no matter how many times you aren't successful. It's not overe till...

It has no sustainability, supply lines cut, Russian people angered and united, thousands of Russian males now volunteering.

Everything you stated about are very doubtful. The Ukes have support and more is coming and they wouldn't have undertaken the 'offensive' if they weren't going to be supported from Ukraine and 'other places'.

The Russian people may be angered, but mostly because Putin and the Kremlin put them in that position, which the people were not agreeable with. If no Russian invasion had occurred, no Ukrainian intrusion would have occurred.

German tanks ( Leopards) on Russian territory a huge mistake

You are talking about 80+ years ago history, and by now, most of the Russians alive then, are dead now. So, those alive now have no idea about the significance of "German tanks inside Russia". Stop imagining what is not happening and not likely to happen.

can you say “ Kursk II”? Kursk was a major battle that sealed the Nazis fate late in WW2, history often repeats, as we are witnessing.

Let's just say, "Kursk I" and not even close to Kursk actions of WW2. It's not the same and don't try to make it so. In WW2 the Germans were the aggressors, and now, it's the Russians that are the aggressors, and Ukraine is just defending itself. Completely different situations.

And, it's very doubtful that any Russians will be volunteering to go die for an unpopular war which Putin/Russia started, and where a whole lot more than 500,000 Russians have already died or been injured.

So, stop speaking on behalf of Putin. Let him tell his lies himself.

Utter stupidity.

Find something other to do that requires having a brain. You might actually be able to grow at least 2 brain cells.

Still utterly stupid.

And your videos and images just goes to show how deep in the gutter your mind is, and how much you like looking up videos and images that represent YOUR lifestyle. Don’t try to project your preferences onto other people; you are the one that loves those images and videos and the people in them.
