With the high price of tuition at four-year colleges and Americans owing nearly $2 billion in student loan debt, some young people are questioning the benefits of a traditional bachelor’s degree and opting to work with their hands.
Vocational school enrollment shot up by 16% last year, reaching a record level since the National Student Clearing House began recording such data. Gen Z has even been dubbed “the tool belt generation.”
While the majority of workers in trades are men, a growing number of young women are opting to work with their hands. In 2020, 11.6% of those who completed an apprenticeship program in the US were female, according to the Department of Labor.
“It’s about time for people to start realizing that you can make more money, have a better career path, have a happier life, have a better family in the long term, by doing stuff with your hands,” said Victoria Carl, a 25-year-old Albany woman who owns her own car repair show.

As a junior in high school, she enrolled in a two-year Automotive Technologies program at Questar III BOCES... took advantage of BOCES’ Youth Apprenticeship Program and got a gig working at the Rensselaer Honda.

This fall, she plans to attend Hudson Valley Community College for a two-year automotive program — and she has no regrets about foregoing the traditional college route.
“Personally I do think that trade school is wiser for some people. No matter what happens as times change, you’re always going to need the trades,” she said. “I love the feeling of being able to look at something and figure out what’s wrong with it. It just feels amazing to know that I can do that.”

Money talks, and their isn’t anything wrong with that.
That is a free market with Supply and Demand.
It’s a good thing.
Awesome. College is a scam for the vast majority.
Unless you plan a career in some STEM related field, college is worthless. I’m a college graduate and have felt it was worthless in my career.
We have reached peak “higher education.”
Welders and other metal trades too.
Where is this country with a “free market” and “supply and demand?”
No offense but males are at a severe disadvantage against the female sexists in charge. There are still unspoken quotas for unqualified or less qualified females to get the jobs and the promotions.
Went from two generations of little boys raising their hands in class and being ignored or ridiculed to push the female teachers’ sexist feminism to males at risk all over America today.
Had a young woman come by once and repair my dishwasher. Found the problem right away ordered the part and temporarily remedied the cause so I could use it until the part came in. She knew her stuff.

Pretty much agree. Graduated college in ‘88 with a BA when it was still affordable. I reflect that it made me well read and rounded in areas I wouldn’t have pursued myself. Teaching critical thinking was still a thing. There were also still some conservative Professors.
But I agree, that value is now gone. Go for technical skills.

One of the reasons why we're reluctant to crack down on foreign students with visas to study in the U.S.
FWIW, my mother was a welder during WWII, making train “cow catchers” for a company support ing the war effort. A Rosie The Riveter type.
What America needed was mothers and wives, what we are getting is just more guys, no wonder we now import our baby makers.
Last week I was at a worksite and saw a woman cement truck driver. She was ready to unload but couldn’t budge the chute into position to drop her load.
She was pretty cute and got a guy to help her. He had to jump and use his legs and hands to move that chute. It was really stuck.
Story being she didn’t even put out the extra effort to move the chute before calling for help.
That is something women need to overcome before they should get paid as much as men.
What could go wrong? There are plenty of women who are stronger than relatively weak men. I can’t throw a javelin at all.

But for being a newscaster or blogger, women have the advantage

“It’s likely that the larger surface area in men’s parietal lobes leads to an increase in functional columns, which are the processing unit in the cortex,” said Koscik. “This may represent a specialization for certain spatial abilities in men.”

Might as well, we should gradually become more Hispanic. But at the same time, we should make the "American Dream" possible for everybody.
We have to eliminate the "woke virus" that's infecting us somehow.
I didn’t understand that post.
Joe Rogan's podcast is the most popular in America. People are interested in what he's talking about.
I was quite shocked when I saw her pull up to my bins one morning.
