Security forces at the Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland (JBSA) returned fire early Saturday on at least one drive-by suspect who is accused of firing upon the main gate at the JBSA-Chapman Training Annex, a JBSA spokesperson tells Fox News Digital.

The officers were fired upon at around 4:30 a.m. by at least one suspect in a sedan and immediately returned fire. There were no injuries reported, and the gate was shut for a number of hours.

I haven’t been there in 10 years, but I don’t think it was an open base at that time.

Live ammunition means nothing if you don’t hit your intended target. Put a Jarhead in the job if you want it done /wink

Base security didn’t give chase and arrest the perp? They just let him drive away? WTH?

It's a public road passing by the gate. What jurisdiction would base security have? Shooting back was their only option. (I'll bet we hear more about that in a negative light soon).

They could have given chase and called in the local constabulary to assist and arrest.

“ Base security didn’t give chase and arrest the perp? They just let him drive away? WTH?”

5th general order. To quit my post only when properly relieved.

His post would have been unsecured if he gave chase.

Of course, that’s assuming the guard was military which it very likely wasn’t.

When I had patrol duty (yes, I did a stint as an MP) we were expressly forbidden to give chase to a fleeing suspect off the military reservation.

You called ahead to the gate guards to close the gates and put up bollards if they had time before the suspect blew through. If the watch commander was on his game, he would put in a call to the local PD to be ready to take up the chase if the suspect made it out.

Civilian police have power outside of their jurisdictions when in “hot pursuit”. I wonder if the same is true for military police.

I'm sure they called the local cops and had eyes on the perp but, it was a drive by with no doubt, a high speed escape.

BTW what do you think the response time would be for a call to the local cops?

The enemy - whether Islamists or drug cartels - is probing for soft spots. Other U.S. bases have been subjected to similar probes recently.

We were always armed standing the gates at Eglin AFB in the ‘70s.

I don't recall the exact date, but it was in 77 or 78. While driving to Darmstadt for a meeting at 32nd AADCOM, traffic was diverted from the autobahn to a rest stop, where 40-50 Polizei were checking vehicles for suspected terrorists.

It gets your attention when there are dozens of submachine guns ready to fire.

Occasionally, the front gates at Hahn and Spangdahlem ABs were closed for the same reason. The Baader Meinhof gang was known to operate in our area.

Probably just practicing. I hear the LA Olympics are going to add a drive by shooting event.

My money is on the pro-hamas wing of the democratic party. Saving democracy or something. Not to smart to shoot at people who are armed and will shoot back.
