German prosecutors have issued a first arrest warrant in their investigation into the undersea explosions in 2022 that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany, according to a media report Wednesday. German authorities refused to comment.

German public broadcaster ARD, the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and the weekly Die Zeit said in a joint report that federal prosecutors obtained an arrest warrant in June against a Ukrainian man believed to have resided until recently in Poland. The reports, which did not cite sources, identified the man as Wolodymyr

It was an ambiguous “crime”.

German government policy was very tentative on the Nordstream thing, as all its neighbors, the US, and a large part of the German political system had long opposed it. It was the SPD’s baby, that the various German governments tolerated, at best.

The Ukrainians blowing it up removed an embarrassment. Everyone in German politics needed such a fait accompli.

” Could he claim , under international law , that destruction of that pipeline was a legitimate act of war?”

Yes, the Ukrainian government could indeed claim it as a legitimate act of war. It hasn’t chosen to do so, so far, but when it does it will have a sound argument.

It wasn’t attacking any nation at all, other than Russia. This was carried out in international waters and the pipeline was a Russian asset. IIRC a Ukrainian military force, official or unofficial is free to take or destroy Russian property at sea.

Interesting. I wonder what constitutional sabotage by a private citizen would look like.

“I can’t imagine that one person, or even a group of people, would have the resources to blow up that pipeline.”

Why not? I have pointed out, many times, that the knowledge and equipment to do so was readily available in the civilian energy sector. More, that Ukraine has civilian divers and energy-service dive outfits. The pipeline wasn’t in very deep water as far as modern commercial diving goes.

The only problem is the funding and explosives. Ukraine could easily have supplied both. This probably took a third party government in the area, my bet is the Poles, turning a blind eye.

Nordstream bypassed Ukraine’s lucrative pipelines...you get fuel via Ukraine...you pay a HUGE fee.

That’s why Ukraine continues to permit Russia to pump gas!
Win-win, one of the very few left in this mess.

But more to the point, Ukraine and Russia are at war. Whatever hurts Russia, and this did, is fair game. It removed the German SPD defense of its ancient, stupid policy. That’s why, IMHO, the military aid spigot from Germany was turned on afterwards.

Well, there it is. I suppose a private individual who’s a really good diver could have done the deed. But it was still state-sponsored.

That was my point - perhaps I was not clear enough about that. 🙂

” But it was still state-sponsored.”

Of course it was. But without official acknowledgement it is deniable.

Have always thought Ukraine did it. They had a lot to gain.

I've said it before...before this is over, Germany will assert their authority and let it flow...

It was most likely Duda who provided the critical, tacit “permission”.

Political opponent of Sikorski. Sikorski wasnt in government at the time.
