Another New Study Finds Rising CO2 Enhances Planetary Greening and Reduces Drought Risk

“…elevated CO2 concentrations not only boosted vegetation growth through the fertilizer effect but also indirectly enhanced water availability [reducing drought risk] by improving water use efficiency.” – Song et al., 2024

One of the more commonly-stated concerns linked to “global warming” is that sweltering heat will parch the terrestrial landscape (browning), limit vegetation growth, and foment water shortages – even widespread drought.

However, a new study suggests the Earth’s rising CO2 concentration has the exact opposite effect in the real world.

In their extensive trend analysis spanning the last few decades, the scientists determined elevated CO2 was the single most “dominant driver” (accounting for 45% of the correlation) when assessing the link between reducing vegetation water demand and improved water use efficiency.

Compared to CO2, temperature and precipitation, for example, play a far less significant role (10-11% of the correlation) in influencing the trend in improved vegetation growth and water use efficiency.

“The CO2 fertilization effect has benefits for both vegetation growth and water use efficiency (WUE).”

“…elevated CO2 concentrations could indirectly enhance water availability by improving [water use efficiency]…reducing vegetation water demand.”

There should be an award The Most Green Company for those that really support the Earth’s plant life, the real ‘greening of the Earth.’ C02 is essential for plants.

Re: drought risk

Israel has forged ahead with desalination of ocean water. They produce so much clean water, they sell it to whoever will purchase it.

A LARGE percentage of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. Off the 800 mile coast of Kalifornia is a LARGE body of water, also known as the Pacific Ocean. During a so-called 1970s drought, Santa Barbara built a desalination plant. Later, the democRATS just let the plant rust. Kalifornia is destroying every dam it can. Not only are dams great for water collection, they create electricity. More inexpensive, abundant energy and water, are anathema to the democRATS. The San Joaquin Valley has been called the breadbasket of the world. The democRATS have starved many farms of water, so much so that if you drive down Hwy 5, there are signs that read Drought Courtesy of Nancy Pelousy.

No, not more food, just more and stronger noxious weeds. More global CO2 only positively effects bad plants. Good plants like food crops and pastureland see no benefit.

Hmmmm...

I coulda told them that, and I’m just a lowly electrician, with 2 unrelated graduate degrees. I’m putting forth the hpthothesis that journalists and lawyers might be clueless.

This is not even a revolutionary discovery.
This theory has been around for very long time.
Al deserts (Sahara included, but US southwest included) are greening. Sahara is shrinking for quite a while (google Greening of Sahara), and the Arizona deserts are a lot more green than they used to be. Dr Happer has several videos dedicated to the matter how CO@ helps plant grow while saving water.

it is just common sense.
The most damage to environment is nowadays done by the “Greens”, poluting Earth with solar cells and windmills.

Exactly, I was going to write that we have known this for years already, AZJeep stated it in more detail.

Ask people what trees are made of, and many will tell you, “dirt.”

No.

In fact they are made largely of “air” which especially includes the carbon from the CO2 in air, something so small in air that it is measured in parts per million.

Trees are made of air? Yeah. And water.

When the population goes up, we need more plants to eat, so we need more CO2 foe them to grow (more “hothouse gasses”) and more rain!

We have a self-balancing planet.

But communofascists want every opportunity to acquire power and control people and property, so they make up any lies they can trick people with.

The slightly higher CO2 that comes with our more developed world is good, not bad.

Longer growing seasons, better food production, lower heating bills, less snow to shovel, shorter winters,......

What’s not to love?

Dems are out to destroy anything and everything that benefits mankind and the unwashed.

This is what they REALLY think of the poor and how much they care what they do to them.

The planet is in the middle of a CO2 DROUGHT. We need MORE CO2 not less.

I read Climate Skeptic articles every day at Watts Up With That website.

I do not have the exact link, but within the last few weeks WUWT posted satellite photo data that shows the Sahara Desert is shrinking.

Rain fall has created thousands of square miles of new green land around the Sahara periphery during the last 10 years.
