Clearing the field for a tactical nuke?

Clearing the field for a tactical nuke?

That would be like having a mouse problem at home and setting a mousetrap that sets fire to the approaching mouse so he can do his final run around the house on fire setting curtains on fire, between the walls, rugs, eventually entire rooms and then well what was once a home is a pile of ashes.

Heard of a guy that set a cat on fire, and it ran under his house. 🤷‍♂️

No need for nukes.

The Russian advantage has been all about artillery. The only method of success they have found in this war is obliterating from a distance any patch of ground the Ukrainians might have forces in.

Now that the fighting has moved to Russian territory they the Russian civilians out of the way to do the same on their territory.

I’m not taking sides, but...

Where will this Russian artillery come from? Do they have a reserve they’re not using in Ukraine, and if not, will they pull units and ammo from the Ukrainian in order to obliterate this new threat?

Will that alleviate the successful damage they were having on the Ukrainians in Ukraine?

It’s been one week since this started, and the Ukrainians aren’t leaving, and certainly aren’t being forced out or repelled in any way.

Do the Russians, unlike the US, still have Neutron nuclear bombs in their arsenal to use against people but with minimal damage to structures and vehicles?

I don’t know. If they had it, they still do. They’ve even brought equipment to Ukraine that is first world war era.

Over the past year they have been getting lots from North Korea including missiles much of which have been duds or not performing very well. I think a lot of what Russia’s getting from NK is old stuff (maybe they’re trying to get rid of it).

Despite all that the west has given Ukraine, Russia has been the biggest tank contributor to Ukraine more than anybody else combined due to Russian troops abandoning their tanks to run for their lives or captured or killed.

"Clearing the field for a tactical nuke?"

A tactical nuke would certainly let them regain the initiative.

How does Western Europe respond? Biden (Obama)?

Man, there are so many damned flash points around the globe right now. But no mean tweets, so there's that.

I've seen several people suggest that Russian use of tactical nuclear weapons inside their own borders would somehow automatically escalate to a full-scale strategic exchange. Obviously, that would require that some other nuclear power respond to the Russian action, by launching nuclear weapons at Russia. Question: who do you think will do that? Macron? Starmer? Biden? Who's going to actually pull the trigger on Armageddon?

Simple fact: no political leader will sign the death warrant for their own nation, in response to some other country using nuclear explosives inside their own borders.

Despite our resident Zeepers wetting all over themselves for the last couple of days... everyone with an ounce of common sense realizes that this is not going to end well. So, get the popcorn ready! The final act of this madness may be close to playing out.

Things will be fine for the cat until the other bears show up.

I’ve seen several people here advocate Russia using tactical nuclear weapons inside their border, too. I’m wondering how that use would affect their country and countrymen, not NATO or the West.

If I was Putin, and of course I am not, I wouldn’t do that unless I was at immediate risk of being overrun. To be known throughout history as the guy who nuked his own country in a war that was not existential would be shameful.

I have not seen anyone actually advocate their use. I have seen multiple people deny that Russia could ever use them, under any circumstances, which is a comical opinion at best, and at worst, a mindset that could potentially make nuclear warfare more likely. I don't believe the Russians will need to use nukes to expel the Ukrainians, but their use may be more likely than any sustained Ukrainian advance on Moscow, or any long-term occupation of Russian territory, or whatever the current mindless jabber might be.

Just today: It's high time for Russia to turn Ukraine Zloba into nuclear glass.

I think most people have NO idea what it takes to have nuclear war for both sides. The only time we've ever had a nuclear war was when ONLY the USA had nuclear weapons. Since the Soviets got their first in 1948/9, the moment to use them in war was gone.

The Russians and Putin are VERY smart people. They will not risk it, both to damage to themselves and their reputation.

If Putin didn't care about his reputation as a world leader, he wouldn't be out there everyday meeting foreigners and diplomats.

The only serious use for nuclear weapons is when the other guy fires them first. I could probably think up a situation or two, however, very unlikely, where Putin would think there was no hope, but that isn't going to happen in this war, because he can end the war in hours.

I don't support Zelensky or the money pit of constant graft that Ukraine is.

But I am very interested in military actions as I am retired military, and one who was deeply involved with NORAD and SAC as well as defense intelligence in my whole career. And BTW, I am strongly opposed to the Deep State and what they've done with the once more noble agencies I was part of. See my profile.

Too many Russians and Ukrainians have died and it is time to stop the killing. THAT is the position the world should take.

"I have not seen anyone actually advocate their use."

I don't see why the Russians should resort to nuclear weapons. Has the Ukrainian assault ground to a halt? What were their objects? Have they simply expanded their front lines with Russia? Meanwhile, how are the Ukrainians doing in Donbas? Have Russian forces there been diverted to Kursk, or is Russia bringing in reserve troops from Russia proper? In a week or so we will know.

The Russians are fortifying the area around the nuclear plant. So the Ukrainians should capture all the territory up to the nuclear plant and hold on to it. To end the war, Russia can get it back but they'll have to exchange the Donbass and Crimea in return.
