Abcarian: This is what makes JD Vance's attempt to 'swiftboat' Tim Walz's military service so pathetic
LA Times ^ | Aug 11, 2024 | Robin Abcarian

Posted on 08/12/2024 5:22:09 AM PDT by where's_the_Outrage?

As soon as I heard Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance smearing the military service of his opponent, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, all I could think was: Seriously? Are we really doing this again?

Are we really going to allow Republicans — who are freaking out now that their presumed glide path back to the White House has become a very bumpy road — to slime Walz the way they slimed Vietnam veteran John Kerry 20 years ago?

“When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, do you know what he did?” Vance said last week in Michigan. “He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him — a fact that he’s been criticized for aggressively by a lot of the people that he served with.” Numerous journalists have called out this lie. They have also reported that the “people he served with” are Republicans rooting for former President Trump.

Walz served 24 years in the Army National Guard before being honorably discharged. During the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, he was stationed in Italy, providing support to American combat troops. In early 2005, months before his unit was ordered to Iraq, he decided to retire from the Guard to run for Congress. He became only the second Democrat in more than a century to capture a traditionally Republican seat and continued to support the military as a member of the House Armed Services and Veterans Affairs committees.

Fair and balanced reporting: In 2004, then-Sen. Kerry, a bona fide war hero, ran against President George W. Bush. Like many privileged young men looking to avoid combat in Vietnam, Bush had served in the Texas Air National Guard.

Taking a look at the comments section, it looks like it is full of an army of Democrat supporters puffing up the article.

All I could think of was: Is it factually true or not?

Yes: Factually true!

Besides his service question.. The man is not morally fit to serve as vp. We don’t reward warped morality.. Youth does not need that example sitting in the vp office.

I certainly remember the MSM only using hushed, reverential tones when discussing Ron DeSantis' military service, or any Republican who has worn the uniform, really. I remember how W Bush was accused of avoiding Vietnam by flying jets in the National Guard. I saw stories suggesting George H. Bush was a coward for not somehow checking on the rest of the crew as his flaming aircraft was falling out of the sky. It's not like he could do a walk through of a TBF Avenger in the best of circumstances.

Anyway, I despise the MSM.

Truth is like kryptonite to the DIMs. Their motus operandi often involves dishonesty, misinformation, and absence of integrity, omission of facts, distortion of facts, manipulation of history and denial.

The main question about this: Did walz distort his “service”? “If” he did, it is “stolen valor”.

Truth seems to be anethema to most DIMocRATs.

The attempt to “Swift boat” Tim Walz is not pathetic at all. Judging from the immediate reaction, and the heavy flak being thrown up, the target is dead-on.

Bombs gone.

first JD was answering Tim’s swipe at his loyalty to the US, Walz firing the 1st show. 2nd, the real Walz story is as much his puffing up/misrepresenting his service as his abandoning his men right before deployment. he is a Poseur of the 1st order as much as anything. liars about their service should not lead as CIC.

How long did the author serve in the Armed Forces? I’m guessing never.

“ During the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, he was stationed in Italy, providing support to American combat troops.”

That’s not what is in question. Walz claims to have been in a war zone, carried a weapon of war, etc. it’s misleading, unless he was stationed in WW2 Italy fighting Germans.

I’ll show respect and gratitude to just about anyone who served our country. But that’s lost when you lie to me about it, diminish the sacrifice of other soldiers, or show disrespect for our country.

MSM reporter copies “Abcarian: This is what makes JD Vance’s attempt to ‘swiftboat’ Tim Walz’s military service so pathetic“ article Word for Word claiming credit for their writing. Gee Abcarian is your attempt to “claim plagiarizing” of an article copied word for word of your work also so pathetic?

It’s not about Walz being a coward. It’s about his lying about not being a coward (which he is).

Vance deployed. Wirz did not. Problem is Wirz intimated or outright said he did.

Did W say he flew combat missions in Viet Nam? No. He said he flew the F-102 as part of the Texas ANG. So, W was part of the Guard and never served in combat; and, Wirz was part of the Guard and never served in combat. But, the left-wing media attacked W and defends Wirz.

John Kerry served in Viet Nam as a swift boat commander. He was awarded the silver star, the bronze star with v, and three purple hearts; having previously served aboard the frigate USS Gridley. He was discharged just short of four years because he was wounded three times. He remained in the Naval Reserve another eight years. Kerry originally enlisted in the Navy (possibly because he otherwise would have been drafted into the army), and got his commission through OCS.

He wound up with a chest full of medals (like some of my fellow cadets who entered ROTC after coming back from Viet Nam). Some people claim the medals weren’t fully deserved, that the military was handing medals out in Viet Nam like candy. I am sympathetic to the argument that standards were relaxed in Viet Nam, but not just for Kerry. I don’t think Kerry was the beneficiary of special treatment. And, I don’t think there was anything wrong about the standards in Viet Nam. The guys who fought in that war did so without the support of the country. There were no parades for them when they came back home. They were told to, quick, change into civilian clothes. Instead of being honored with a monument in the open, they got a monument in a low spot in a secluded place on the Washington Mall. Nevertheless, a beautiful and poignant monument.

Why did Swift Boat allegations of stolen valor stick with John Kerry? I believe it was because after coming home, he joined the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society, a bunch of communists), and even attended meetings where they planned to assassinate U.S. Senators, and because he (Kerry) threw his medals away.

You won’t find this information in wikipedia. They’re scrubbed this derogatory information from history. They want you to think John Kerry was Swift Boat’ed for no reason other than politics, when Kerry crossed over to the other side.

Nowadays, the whole Democratic Party is like the SDS. Wirz, in particular, is cool with the pro-Hamas wing of his party. He allows the right kind of people to riot in the street, engaging in vandalism and arson, and at the same time he locks people up for insurrection for as little as trespass. Wirz covets power and wants to transform this country into a green-neo-Marxist totalitarian state.

I’m sorry to tell you, but we not only lost in Viet Nam, Iraq and Afghanistan. We are in danger of losing here.
