A former detective who helped to police the notorious Brixton riots has accused Keir Starmer of taking a too "hardline approach" to policing the riots and said he needs to recognise there are law abiding members of the public with legitimate concerns.
Former Met Police undercover detective Peter Bleksley said the Prime Minister has backed himself into a corner with a hard-line stance that is now being mimicked by his former force's leaders.
He is one of several ex-officers to today share their views on the police and Government handling of the riots with Express.co.uk.
One claimed Mr Starmer was "out of his depth", while Mr Bleksley insisted he has fanned the flames of violence by locking horns with the British public instead of listening to their concerns.
Mr Bleksley, who previously fronted the Channel 4 show Hunted, was an officer during the 1981 Brixton riots, when young members of the black community fought with police for three days, amid claims of police brutality.
More than 300 people were injured with buildings damaged and cars set on fire costing £7.5m.
Mr Bleksley said there were four things the police and the Prime Minister needed to do to prevent ongoing riots.
He said they first need to take the heat out of the situation, then stop flexing muscles to lock horns with the public.
Then they need to "acknowledge that there are genuine concerns from law abiding citizens before pledging to listen to those.
He said: "Starmer has backed himself into a corner in that it's all tough talk, as opposed to any kind of conciliation. He had an opportunity at the start to say 'look we've had 14 years of Tory mismanagement with so many things they got wrong and I appreciate people are unhappy about the economy being rubbish...

the Tories never acknowledged those concerns, so why would incoming radical leftists who have just won a huge majority in Parliament, feel the need to acknowledge anything? Britains globalist marxists are certainly "feeling their oats"
I’m a viewer from afar but I can’t escape the impression that the Tories have handed Labour a flaming bag of dog poo that they themselves lit.
A mistake implies he’s not doing it on purpose.
The goal of the current British government is NOT to diffuse the situation, but to make it worse. They want to step on the neck of the British people. They want Islamic rule and sharia law.
The tide is turning....no more sitting idly by assuming your elected officials represent everyone equally. The clash of cultures/civilizations begins again. May the West win, and learn. Read history; the battle between the West and islam has been going on for 1,400 years. It is their goal to conquer and subjugate the West any which way they can. After all, mad mo has told them so, and his orders are from the mouth of god himself. This hasn’t changed since mo and his followers raped and pillaged, and will continue, unless they are defeated and banished, otherwise, it begins again.
A big problem is that the new UK government does not listen to the intelligence service. It will probably take a few months before they realize it should.
Not sure what their intelligence service is like but they may be involved in politics rather than gathering intelligence.
Hard to fight without guns.
The police in the United Kingdom are now opening their press conferences with Islamic greetings.
The “conspiracy theory” is no more.
It’s a Muslim nation now. pic.twitter.com/oR750h8BzV— Joey Mannarino (@JoeyMannarinoUS) August 7, 2024
At first, I thought that was a parody.
No, they are OK.
I wonder if Starmer has had this man arrested yet for hate speech. 🙄
Well said. Prayers for the British people.
Funny it’s the compassionate left that immediately escalates into violence .
The only problem is the muslims. Get rid of them and the problem goes away.
A Dhimmi.
“One claimed Mr Starmer was “out of his depth”
No he’s not, he’s just a commie asshole.
What’s amazing is, the issue of ‘immigrants’ has united the Nationalists and Unionists in Ireland - they’re even attending pubs together
That is an interesting insight.
