Robert Jenrick has been criticised by Muslim parliamentarians for saying police should “immediately arrest” any protesters shouting “Allahu Akbar”, the Arabic phrase which means God is great.
The Tory leadership candidate was speaking on Sky News about the accusations that police have been treating far-right marches and violence more harshly than other protests.
Jenrick said on Sky News he had been angered by the way that pro-Palestinian demonstrations had been policed. “I have been very critical of police in the past, particularly around the attitude of some police forces to the protests we saw since 7 October.
“I thought it was quite wrong that somebody could shout ‘Allahu Akbar’ on the streets of London and not be immediately arrested, project genocidal chants on to Big Ben and not be immediately arrested. That attitude is wrong and I’ll always call out the police for it.”
Jenrick, who is one of the favourites to win the Conservative leadership, was criticised by the Conservative peer Sayeeda Warsi and the Labour MP Naz Shah.

Depending on the setting, may shoot them instead?
and why not? Christians are arrested for praying...SILENTLY.
Free speech for my voters but not for yours.
“Alluhu Akbar” is “hate speech”
And deport them.
It really means “Our god is greater”, ie, “We are greater”.
My initial reaction as well. Minus the “depending” clause.
...and that’s actually a very good point. That proclamation is usually followed by some sort of mass violence.
OK, then why do you do when someone shouts Deus Vult?
I've read quite a few times that the phrase means Allah is greater, or Allah is the greatest. Surely no institutions in the Western press would clean up a phrase that means Islam is superior and present it in a politically correct form.
But its use is akin to "Banzai" in a bayonet charge cry on Saipan. Upon hearing it safeties need to come off and the source identified.
Remember, "Islam" isn't a noun. It's a verb, meaning "Submit!", imperative case.
Beat me to it. I’d hit the ground if I heard that shouted.
Akbar is the superlative form.

Sayeeda Warsi and Naz Shah....I think I see the issue there....
Thank you for that excellent explanation.
I'll bet he was.
I think the most relevant question is: what does the phrase Allahu Akbar mean to those who use it when confronting, or attacking someone of a different belief system. Little doubt it means that their god, and their prophet and their belief system are superior to that of whomever they might be confronting over some dispute.
What does the phrase mean to those who use it?
“ Depending on the setting, may shoot them instead?”
Exactly - skip the arrest part. No wonder he’s facing criticism
