Arizona toddler who died of heat exposure left in 108.9-degree car by video game-playing dad: cops

An Arizona toddler who died from heat exposure was left in a car that reached scorching temperatures of nearly 109 degrees — while her distracted dad allegedly played video games, authorities said.

Parker Scholtes, 2, was found dead in a Honda SUV parked outside her home in the Tucson suburb of Marana — where her father, Christopher Scholtes, left the tot to nap for more than three hours on July 9, according to police.

By the time first responders discovered the girl’s lifeless body, the temperature in the vehicle had soared to 108.9 degrees, according to an autopsy report released to the Arizona Republic Wednesday.

The toddler’s cause of death was officially found to be “environmental heat exposure” and the manner was listed as accidental, the paper reported.

Christopher Scholtes, 37— who was allegedly inside the home playing PlayStation video games while the girl died — was charged three days later with second-degree murder, authorities said.

The poor child. And what a useless father. He looks to be in his late 30s and a video game was obviously more important than his child. He had a responsibility and commitment to that child and he failed her because of a video game!

Maybe video games should pause for an announcement every 5 minutes asking players if they know where their children are.

Start charging these "forgetful" parents with second degree murder and watch how fast their memory will suddenly improve.

That's a bloody good idea.

Some of these instances are tragic accidents.
But some of these instances are not accidents.

I'll probably step on some toes here, but what in the world is a grown 37 year old man doing playing video games? On a work day? With his baby in the car? For three hours? In Arizona? In the summertime?

My brain is about to short out over this. What world am I living in?

Another poster suggested dope had a role in this. One toke over the line. Yep.

” the temperature in the vehicle had soared to 108.9 degrees, according to an autopsy report released to the Arizona Republic Wednesday.”

Are the sure that it wasn’t 108.92 degrees?

You’re probably correct. Drugs were most likely involved.

“Are the sure that it wasn’t 108.92 degrees?”

I’m sure it was closer to 160 degrees. 108 was the outside air temperature.

But some of these instances are not accidents.

This was negligence.

Dad had grown comfortable leaving the kids sleeping in the car so he could have some peace and quiet playing his video games.

His wife was a doctor. I'm guessing he was the "house husband."

I don't think he did this on purpose. It was gross negligence, complacency, and laziness.

There are just some mistakes you are not allowed to make as a parent because the consequences are catastrophic.

“I’ll probably step on some toes here, but what in the world is a grown 37 year old man doing playing video games?”

It’s like any other addiction - it’s users need to have the “good-feelings” center of the brain stimulated; constantly, if possible. Eventually this causes them to believe Gameland is their real world.
This is true whether the person is 13, 37 or even 77.

Let this be a warning to women: don’t marry a man-child who cares more about video games than anything else.

I was terrified I would forget my sons were in the car when they were tiny.

I would put one of my shoes in the back seat so I couldn’t forget them.

“108 was the outside air temperature.”

I am sure it was a lot hotter. I just found the statement to be ridiculous.
