Olympic Games organisers have said they are "sorry" that scenes in Friday's opening ceremony caused offence.
A banquet sequence featuring drag artists in particular came in for criticism from Christian groups, who felt it parodied Leonardo da Vinci's painting 'The Last Supper'.
That famous 15th Century work depicts a key biblical scene.
The Catholic Church in France was among critics, saying the ceremony featured "scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity".
A US telecommunications company, C Spire, said it would be pulling its advertising around the Olympic Games after being "shocked by the mockery of the Last Supper during the opening ceremonies".

What olympics?
Oh screw this guy.
They aren’t sorry! They had no problem doing such drivel in the first place. I won’t watch a single second of the Olympics…….
If the Paris Olympics organizers had real stones the opening ceremonies would have depicted Charles Martel smashing the invading Umayyads at the Battle of Tours.
Just rake in the money...that’s what it’s all about. Olympics supposed to be here in 2028...Cancel it...
That would teach them a lesson
I doubt if he is ‘sorry’. He’s probably quite proud of himself for having garnered all this attention, even the scorn. Some things that have been said or done can never be unsaid or undone, this enthusiastic debauchment of the Olympics open is one them.
Uh huh, suuuure.
It was an obvious copy of the painting, yes, but what was being parodied was the event, not a piece of canvas. The media are trying to minimize this as some weird sort of art criticism, which it is not.
They placed Bacchus in the middle of the Last Supper to compare the latter to a drunken orgy. And yes, that's more than a little bit offensive.
So sorry that they had to erase all criticism of it.
The more that boycott the merrier.
Every sponsor should withdraw. And all viewers should watch reruns of Hogan’s Heros instead.
Oh, was someone offended? They are SOOOOOOOP sorry those offended “didn’t get it”.
You silly Christians. You just felt it was a parody. It really wasn't that at all.
Far be it from the Beeb to simply write "...the blasphemous denigration of Leonardo da Vinci's painting 'The Last Supper'."
Sure they didn’t know. sarc
I have a lot of trouble being kind to enemies and forgiving them. Along with giving my cloak as well as my coat and helping them to raise up and refill their tipped over cart.
So a simple “sorry about that” at the Olympics makes it all go away because religious people will quietly accept it.
Like we do with our American flag being burned and our monuments spray painted by enemies.
Let’s move on. Put it behind you. Heard that a lot lately.
Every Christian leader of every denomination should be decrying this performance. It’s time to take a stand against the attack on Christianity. Has the Pope said anything? Cardinal Dolan? Welby? Any of the Eastern Orthodox Patriarchs?
The Olympics are past their “sell by” date.
Those pigs aren’t sorry. They’re afraid of repercussions, but that’s not the same thing. Those fags would force march decent humanity into ovens if they could and, the way things are going, they might just do that some day.
