Caltrans needs to make a work around. They suggest only essential drivers...so an essential driver is gonna try and get through a blocked road?
All these traffic issues will disappear after the bullet train goes in...yeah, right.

No good way around an I15 shutdown.
Go back to LA, get on I10, turn north on US95 east of Blythe.

Or go back to Barstow to I-40 East then Hwy. 95 North to Boulder City/Henderson/Vegas. (I think that is the “official” CHP “workaround”/detour).

Crampons and handwarmers and gear for two, you are my kind of detail oriented guy.

Even for Wisconsin and Minnesota I carried enough for two people to be comfortable at 20 below for a week.

Some people think in terms of surviving but I think in terms of enjoying the adventure, which involves light, something to read and some cards, coffee and hot chocolate, some booze, and being able to sleep comfortably, for summer mosquito head nets and some netting and a couple of cotton sheets.

When people say they carry a blanket in their winter car I always tell them the blankets are to put inside of their sleeping bag that they have in the trunk, and I remind them that in the snow they will be getting out of the car to work on the car and to use the bathroom and to clear snow away, so they better prepare for that to stay dry and sleep dry and with warm feet, and hand warmers are part of the luxury in a sleeping bag.

I live in the middle of nowhere, and know several to many ways of driving back routes to anywhere I want to get if something would happen to block the main paved route.

But then all my vehicles are four wheel drive and I have the skills to navigate back terrain. In fact, I have even done a lot of back road exploration around Las Vegas, and some around Baker, CA.... I’ll have to check my topo maps to see if I can find back road routes.

Drove that a couple of times when I lived in Vegas, it turns into NOTHING out there pretty quickly. If they’ve shut it down for a long time, that could be BAD bad. It IS the desert after all.

Where did the lithium batteries come into play here?

They were reportedly “industrial” lithium batteries...maybe Tesla “Battery Wall” size or the even bigger ones they use in “battery storage farms” (for “the night” after solar all day).
See:

@CatOwner...no YT for you? Then as an alternative here is a lithium battery (eBike/bicycle) mishap in an elevator on “Rumble”!:

Our government and State Police CHP are so cruel and stupid, they cant even close the hiway off to eastbound traffic and let the cars and trucks turn around and go back west in the eastbound lane until they get done over-reacting

Humans are amazing at what they can do and yet be so stupid at the same time

So, I checked my maps... There is a county road (CR20909) that parallels I-15 Varying about 100 yards to 1/2 mile away from the freeway from Baker to Mountain Pass, and then there are more county roads from Mountain Pass on into Las Vegas, passable to regular vehicles.

I don’t know if there are any exits from the interstate to the county road, but surely there are places to cross the median and head back to Baker and access the county road from there, and head to Vegas if they really wanted to.

But then, the cops probably won’t let anyone do anything but stay penned up like sheep, much less actually organize a rerouting and guide people out of the trap..

I thought the whole point of the Interstate Highway System was that it never closed. Might get down to one lane, but never closed. Apparently there is no provision to prevent hazardous products on the system to avoid closures? Sounds like a job for the California legislature, to pass a law prohibiting the transportation of dangerous materials like lithium batteries.

Or maybe just post a sign - No Road Closures Allowed.

As for crossing the median many miles of cables fences prevent doing that on some highways. I think I see that in the fire picture.

With median fences and sound walls one is effectively imprisoned.

You packed well.

I live in Montana and on May 8th we had a snow storm (no weather warnings on any of my weather apps) come out of nowhere - 24” at my house. I-90 wasn’t being plowed over the pass from Bozeman to Livingston and, inevitably several trucks got stuck near the top of the pass leading to a 10+ mile backup of traffic...

It took 18 hours to clear before the highway reopened.

Anything can happen when you are near mountains. It’s good to be prepared.

Soon to be hardened more with the LV to LA bullet train starting construction.

Nothing like this, but a few weeks ago returning on I-10 to Phoenix from LA, an 18 wheeler I had seen blocking traffic THE DAY BEFORE was still there and traffic was (thankfully) at least one lane. The truck was carrying water bottles, and there was a 3-ft hole blown out of the middle, like a bazooka had hit it from the inside out.

At any rate, it took an hour to go 7 miles.
