My father was ticketed for speeding on that highway, for driving over 100MPH.

I can remember my dad averaging over 100mph in Nevada when the speed limit was ‘reasonable and proper’. When we slowed to 60 coming into a town in felt like 25.

I like to keep my gear in a backpack which also makes it easier to carry a gas can if that is the situation, or for carrying gear if I have to leave the car, and gear means winter boots and extra socks for a winter hike for gas or to seek help.

For summer I include 2 survival blankets that have one side reflective and paracord for reducing the sun on the car if in the desert, also a sun reflective umbrella for working on the car or hiking out.

Thirty were carried in a semi. Dumped on curve, fire still live as they cannot put water on it.

That's good, fellas, give me a splay burn around the perimeter with holes on the perimeter, please; holes at 40, 60, and 80 meters. Right here!

No, not really any back roads or alternate routes that anything but a high clearance 4WD could drive on, and even then, wouldn't take anyone where they want to go. I've been all over that part of the Mojave Desert in the back country and it's pretty remote and rugged, but yes, they could cross the median head back, that's what I would do.

I have read that sand smothers the fire.one can use baking soda. Thermal blankets. Etc. Carbon dioxide can help smother...but the fire has to be cooled also.

Is it possible that this is a terrorist attack? There are lots of ways to make out of control systems cause lots of damage and loss of life.

If you are going to drive 100 mph, that is as good a section of road as any—as long as your tires have a good speed and temperature rating.

In 2012 I retired from my job in Maryland and drove cross country to Oregon in early October with my BIL as co-driver. I worked inside NSA contractor security for 24 years, so I considered myself a professional paranoid.

I packed emergency cold weather gear for two, a weeks worth of MRIs, flares, chem lights, hand warmers, even crampons that attach to boots. That’s a lot of stuff to cram into a sports car.

It stayed hot the whole way, except for the two days and one night in central Wyoming. We did stay one day ahead of wind warnings and road closures on I-80 from Eastern Nebraska to Utah.
