It was a grey, drizzly Monday on March 30, 1981, when President Reagan emerged from the Washington Hilton hotel, heading back to his presidential limousine parked a few yards away.
His inauguration had been only a few weeks before and he'd just finished speaking at a lunch of US labor union leaders.
Along with the rest of the White House press corps I was about 20 feet away, roped off from the President. Suddenly, just as one of our number shouted a question for him, shots rang out.
In a split second, a burly Secret Service agent brusquely bundled Reagan into the limo, another pushed his colleague hard to ensure both he and the President were flat on the back seat.
The limo was surrounded by agents, guns drawn, the would-be assassin wrestled to the ground by the public as well as law enforcement. Reagan's vehicle sped off.
Within four minutes it was at George Washington Hospital, even though, not initially realizing the President had been hit (a bullet had entered his rib cage), the Secret Service had at first started out for the White House.
Reagan was close to death on arrival. But he survived, thanks in no small part to the speedy response of the Secret Service, which thwarted the shooter.
Now consider what happened when Donald Trump was shot on Saturday night.
The initial response was by the book. Brave agents piled on him to protect him from further bullets. They kept him down until they were told the shooter had been killed.

According to SS Director Cheatle, the roof was too slanted and dangerous to place more assets. About the same degree of a slope I used to skateboard on as a kid. Gawd, I despise this Administration.
Couldn't agree more. Sheesh, I used to skateboard those degrees of slope when I was a kid (1960's)
This is FALSE. The initial response was slow and confused. It was 3 seconds from the first shot until SS reached Trump, who had already figured out what was happening and taken cover on his own. The short fat female agent below the dais/podium took cover and said "what are we doing? What are we doing?" for over 10 seconds and was the last of the personal detail on stage. Photographers were running around the dais just feet from Trump before he was even secured. The dais was not secured for a full 30 seconds.
I call BS to all these reports. They want people to thin it was incompetence and not an assassination coordinated by the Biden, the democraps, and the Secret Service.
Complete BS. Negates the entire reason for the existence of the secret service. Are they assuming the first shot will always miss? Or that they can just all stand around with their thumbs in their asses while an assassin takes out their charge?
Anyone too stupid to reject this excuse needs to go rent a second brain cell.
I can understand why a police or SS sniper wouldn’t squeeze off a round at an uncertain target in this day and age, but it was absolutely inexcusable for the situation to ever get to the point where Trump was standing there exposed at all once the threat had been identified.
If that is the agency rule, I’d like to know when it was adopted. July 12, 2024?
And it turned out that McCarthy was a democrat, IIRC.
Personally, I don’t buy all the situational confusion nonsense. They have radios. They had time. They even had warnings plural. They’re not ‘listening to the rally’. They’re looking thru scoops and listening to their radios. And then there’s even more they have going for them. This is not a chaotic urban environment. This is a simple field with several very obvious buildings. Gets me so mad to think they’re going to get away with it. People buying their bs.
High value targets have different ROE. Ask any SEAL, Delta, Marine Recon, Rangers and most assuredly presidential Secret Service protection. Your source is wrong. The above sees a gun, they shoot to kill. Standard operating procedure (SOP)
Oh noes, a slanted driveway. Best get the child inside because Dad can’t use his 870 on that incline to protect his kid.
I've seen the unidentified photo that resembles Thomas Crooks. But it doesn't look like a rooftop to me.
The question then remains: Where and how was the photo taken and when?
Democrats back then are sure a lot different than Democrats of today.
Dont want to see another short fat ineffective guard in his detail from now on, disgrace.
The ease with which they flat-out lie should give everyone pause.
This ... and, their complete disregard for sanctity of life.

Oh, the slope, the slope! 🙄
The more I read, the more this sounds intentional and not incompetence. Even incompetents get some things right; nobody seems to have gotten it right here.
Tim McCarthy. He took a bullet for President Reagan and survived.
[The trouble with that guy’s assessment is that the SS knew from multiple reports that there was an armed shooter on that roof 26 minutes before the shooter fired any shots. ]
Just as he was drawing a bead, the cop poked his head above the roofline, whereupon the kid swung to face him. The knowledge that he was within maybe seconds of being fired upon probably made him rush his shots, causing death and injury to bystanders while mostly missing his primary objective.
* The kid was no Einstein, the way most people aren’t, but he was above average. He had just acquired a 2 year science diploma at the local community college, and had been accepted into the engineering program at Robert Morris University and University of Pittsburgh (#45 nationwide among engineering schools).
