A local law enforcement officer spotted a suspicious man carrying a range-finder "in or just-outside" the venue before former President Donald Trump took the stage at his rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania on Saturday night, according to a law enforcement source.
The officer reported the sighting to state police, the source said. He took a photo, and there was a discussion about whether what he was carrying was a pair of binoculars to try and see the rally better.

Much of what you said is open for discussion. The 5.56 does have an arched trajectory. Being familiar with this trajectory at what length of barrel and at what distance the weapon was zeroed in at ensures better accuracy.
In my opinion, zeroing a 5.56 in at 50 yards gives reasonable accuracy up to 200 yards.
If he used only open iron sights, the weapon should stay zeroed. If a quality red dot was used, it should still stay zeroed.
If he used a magnified red dot and compensated for trajectory, he could hit a grape fruit at 130 yards. If he used a range finder chances are he was quite familiar with the flight path of the round he used.
Just my opinion, more experienced shooters may disagree.
This assumes that the man with the range finder was the assassin, and not a co-conspirator. Have their faces been matched? Has the range finder been found and were there prints to lift from it?

No, I don’t zero every trip to the range. But I ALWAYS do the first time I use a new weapon or get a weapon back that has been used or even in the possession of someone else.
My understanding is that the assassin’s father has many weapons and this could well have been the first time the son used that particular one. In any case, given the importance of his “mission”, it would have been prudent to zero pre mission.

OK, the shooter had and used a range finder. Why?
Did he not know the range from the roof to Trump? If it was a deep state setup, the range was known to about 1/2 inch.
If someone pre-dialed his gun, he did not need to range.
If he was a video game shooter, then ‘range finding’ is part of the shooter’s procedure, and he ‘should do that’.
If he had never been there before, and was really on his own, maybe range finding indicates that.
Like many have said, 223/5.56 is so flat that if he had any estimate of the distance he would not have to adjust/compensate (unless he watched some movies or video games and they did).
I am suggesting that his use of a range finder indicated his state of mind. ‘I am supposed to to this, for accuracy’. Maybe meaning he was not set up for the shot, thinking he was on his own.
But then, if he was on drugs or meds (did anyone check - has he been cremeated yet?) this was just a detail for him; the big picture was him shooting.
Yeah...the original M-16 A1 rear sight had a single aperture for ranges 0-300 yards(maybe meters). We’ll never know where he was aiming...center of mass, head shot...
Well, not really. The 5.56 gains in elevation right out of the barrel, then starts to drop.
When I bought my first 5.56 the guy selling it told me how the projectile performs at various distances. It was obvious he was telling me the bullet goes up from the line of sight then drops. When I started shooting it, it was obvious he was right.

My first 5.56 is a 16 inch barrel. The next purchase is a 20 inch barrel which is more accurate due to higher velocity.
Two points to make here, is you’ve got to do range time at various distances and settle on a good distance to zero in on. Fifty yards is my choice.
The second point is the assassin was well aware of what I just said, as he had a range finder and must have had a range card indicating the rise or drop of the projectile for an accurate head shot. The good news is Trump turned his head the same time the assassin decided to pull the trigger.
The assassin was not the idiot his high school buddies said he was at their rifle range. Someone trained this guy in ballistics as well as political thought.
If the barrel is level, what possibly can cause a spinning bullet to 'lift'?
