BREAKING NEWS Donald Trump picks J.D. Vance as running mate opting for a MAGA favorite in last-minute decision

Donald Trump has picked Ohio senator J.D. Vance as his running mate, choosing a grassroots favorite ahead of more seasoned political operators.

The former president left it until the last possible moment, using all his showman skills to leave the world guessing, before opting for 39-year-old Vance after the Republican National Convention had already begun in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Vance swept to national attention when he published his bestselling memoir 'Hillbilly Elegy,' in 2016, the year Trump was elected president.

He has been a senator for less than two years but has established himself as one of the fiercest defenders of Trump’s 'Make America Great Again' agenda, especially when it comes to foreign policy, trade and immigration.

The former venture capitalist and U.S. Marine had initially been critical of Trump.

Before people start making disparaging and unwarranted accusations about the man, instead of watching The View and MSNBC, read his book.

Yep. I watched him on a few author panels years before he went into politics. Hillbilly who made it into Yale after time in the USMC. Always seemed really solid. Maybe too much of a thinker for some on this site.

Trump doesn't pick the VP, the party does.

If this were the case, it would've been Burgum, Youngkin, --or Haley.

Could have done worse.

That's my attitude as well. I honestly don't know much about J.D. Vance, except a lot of people I follow on Twitter were deeply distressed and concerned over this pick.

I don't know that it matters much. He went with a young white guy and not a "checks the right box" DEI hire so I suppose there's that.

Anyhow, Godspeed Trump/Vance!

Pro-life groups rally behind Trump VP pick JD Vance
despite his support for ‘accessible’ abortion pills

Pro-life advocacy groups are backing Ohio Senator JD Vance, whom former President Donald Trump selected as his running mate in the 2024 presidential election, despite his recent support for abortion pill access. Last week, Vance in an interview with “Meet the Press” said that he supports the abortion pill mifepristone “being accessible” after the Supreme Court ruled against pro-life advocates who sued to end its Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. Vance’s position on abortion pill access is apparently not dissuading support from pro-life groups who are hailing Trump’s selection for vice president as “an exceptional selection.”

“His courage in exposing the Democrats’ agenda of abortion for any reason, even in the seventh, eighth, or ninth month, helped propel him to a decisive victory in the 2022 midterm elections,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro Life America. “Vance’s hardscrabble upbringing informs his compassionate approach to this issue. He saw firsthand how the deck can be stacked against women facing unexpected pregnancies if they do not have the support and resources they need, even though most would rather choose life. His ability to compellingly share these stories on a national stage will surely be an asset,” she said.

Brian Burch, president of CatholicVote said his organization “will proudly help the Trump-Vance ticket win in November. “Vance represents a vision for the country that we have long embraced – a vision that proudly prioritizes American workers, families, and children. A vision that proudly puts the needs and interests of Americans first, while pushing back against the secular, technocratic, and globalist agendas of our elitist corporate and political class that despise common people and our common moral and religious way of life,” he said. Vance, he said, “is solidly pro-life.” “But it’s important to note that he is not running for president himself and understands he must work with President Trump to both win the election and then govern in a way that actually achieves real results for the unborn, given the political realities of our moment,” Bursch added.

Bursch also said that “it’s premature to draw too broad a conclusion about Vance’s abortion advocacy” based solely on what he called “a left-leaning gotcha interview.” “We understand the public remains divided over this issue, yet mifeprestone deserves to be looked at closely given the reckless mishandling of its approval by the FDA, as well as its demonstrated harm to women. There is no question that these abortion drugs directly destroy an innocent human life. But they also have significant risks for the mother of the baby.” “We will continue to press both Trump and Vance to take seriously the harm these dangerous drugs pose to women and society at large,” he said.

But Vance didn’t get unanimous approval from the pro-life activist community. Lila Rose of Live Action posted a statement on X saying, “Both J.D. Vance and President Trump support the legalization of abortion pills. This is heartbreaking and wrong.” A Fox News poll in May revealed that the issue of abortion access was one of three “deal breaker” issues for voters in 2024, along with border security and the economy. At 15%, abortion edges out the economy and border security/immigration (each at 14%) as the biggest deal-breaker issue, according to that poll.

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis
Hardcover – by J. D. Vance (Author)

#1 Best Seller in Sociology of Rural Areas
See all formats and editions

THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER IS NOW A MAJOR-MOTION PICTURE DIRECTED BY RON HOWARD AND STARRING AMY ADAMS, GLENN CLOSE, AND GABRIEL BASSO

“You will not read a more important book about America this year.”—The Economist

“A riveting book.”—The Wall Street Journal

“Essential reading.”—David Brooks, New York Times

From a former marine and Yale Law School graduate, a powerful account of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town that offers a broader, probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

The Vance family story begins hopefully in postwar America. J. D.’s grandparents were “dirt poor and in love,” and moved north from Kentucky’s Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually their grandchild (the author) would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of their success in achieving generational upward mobility.

But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that this is only the short, superficial version. Vance’s grandparents, aunt, uncle, sister, and, most of all, his mother, struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life, and were never able to fully escape the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America. Vance piercingly shows how he himself still carries around the demons of their chaotic family history.

A deeply moving memoir with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country.

Vance opposes abortion and he has indicated that he may support a federal ban on abortions after 15 weeks. He has more recently said that abortion laws should be set by the states.

When asked whether abortion laws should include exceptions for rape and incest, he said, “two wrong[s] don’t make a right.”

Vance opposes the Respect for Marriage Act[78][79] and has said, “I believe that marriage is between one man and one woman, but I don’t think the gay marriage issue is alive right now. I’m not one of these guys who’s looking to try to take people’s families and rip them apart.”[80]

Vance has proposed a bill that would make gender-affirming care for minors a federal felony and block taxpayer funds from being used for it, saying in a statement, “Under no circumstances should doctors be allowed to perform these gruesome, irreversible operations on underage children.”

Vance was raised in a “conservative, evangelical” branch of Protestantism, but by September 2016, he was “thinking very seriously about converting to Catholicism” but was “not an active participant” in any particular Christian denomination.[135] In August 2019, Vance was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church in a ceremony at St. Gertrude Priory in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He chose Augustine of Hippo as his confirmation saint. Vance said he converted because he “became persuaded over time that Catholicism was true [...] and Augustine gave me a way to understand Christian faith in a strongly intellectual way”, further describing Catholic theology’s influence on his political views.

From your post, I can appreciate Vance’s thoughtfulness and strong, yet measured platform. Did not know who he was until recent days.

“Vance is pro-life———he is a convert to Catholicism.”

He probably was pro-life before that. People actually believe that only RCs are pro-life? In our Presbyterian church, the pro-choice clinic and center is the largest line item in our budget. The pastor works hand-in-hand with the Baptist preachers in the area to coordinate pro-life events.

No question.....pro-life support comes from many areas.

Was just trying to make the point that (a) the Catholic Church has an official
position against abortion and (b) Vance has said his faith informs his political positions.

I should have clarified that and I do so appreciate your valuable input and experience on the issue.

I love this....

When asked whether abortion laws should include exceptions for the
touchy issues of rape and incest, Vance said, “two wrong[s] don’t make a right.”

I haven’t really followed Vance but all the right people hate him. RINOs, Neocons, Van the commie Jones. My first thought of him was smarter than though snob. Maybe being at a couple of Trump rallies reminded him of the good people in middle America, instead of just his dysfunctional family.

Might have to grab his book to further understand him.

How in the actual *uck could he have picked so badly? Things finally moving in our favor &... splat. A fat, bearded guy with zero charisma. Trump is awfffffffullll at choosing candidates. His sons apparently talked him into this. Thanks Eric & Don Jr. It’s like yall want the least electable people known to man & could care less about whether they will move votes. I’m sick of being a part of a party so devoted to never strategizing & actually winning power & seats. This is why we get defeated. Fu*king braindead idiots! 🙄

For sure, those abilities are the reasons Trump wanted him as VP.

Vance is also a financial genius..... made his name in that Wall Street game......another plus for Trump.

“ He recently came out in support of higher minimum wages.”

I read the entire long article that had that as one of its topics. Vance’s point was that if people were paid a higher minimum wage, businesses would be more interested in using more modern technology and automation so that they could have fewer workers. This would lead to much less immigration which would be beneficial for our country. .

The democrats don't need the vote in the current SCOTUS.

All they need to do is repeat their "success" in 2020 and 2022.

Dobbs was issued June 22, 2022. Biden being President did not mean a thing. The President plus both houses of Congress cannot reverse the Supreme Court. 30 million illegal aliens would not change a single justice.

There only nine votes at Scotus.

Abortion will be at best third, behind the economy (inflation) and immigration.
