'He's one handsome son of a b****': How MAGA favorite JD Vance caught Trump's eye as he weighs his pick for VP
Daily Mail ^ | Updated 09:30 EDT 11 Jul 2024 | Rob Crilly, Chief U.S. Political Correspondent

If looks are the key to Donald Trump's vice presidential pick then there is only one winner.

J.D. Vance's blue eyes and thick beard first caught the attention of the former president two years ago, when the author and former Marine was competing for the Republican nomination in Ohio's Senate race.

'He's one handsome son of a bitch,' Trump told his inner circle.

Since then Vance has emerged as one of his most formidable promoters on cable news channels.

And a strict running regimen instituted during his run for Senate has seen the possible veep lose weight recently, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by Trump himself, according to a source familiar with the former president's conversations.

'He's got the look,' is another Trump assessment, noting the slimmed down figure and choice of well-fitting suits.

It leaves the Ohio senator as one of three candidates—along with Sen. Marco Rubio, 53, and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, 67—on a shortlist for vice president.

Supporters, who include the likes of Donald Trump Jr. and former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, say he brings a deep connection with the rust belt states that could decide the election, a personal history that embodies the American Dream, and the sort of TV skills essential for the president's number-one advocate.

Critics accuse him of being a political chameleon, selling out his Never Trump credentials at the first sniff of power.

Either way it marks an extraordinary rise for a 39-year-old brought up in the crushing poverty of southern Ohio by his heroin-addicted mother and his fierce grandmother.

His 2016 memoir, 'Hillbilly Elegy,' catapulted him to literary and political fame, establishing him as the sort of working class, white author who could decode Trump and his allure for an uncomprehending liberal and conservative establishment.

He called President Trump (then candidate Trump) "America's Hitler" and "reprehensible."

Unforgivable.

I would consider Vance's odds as VP pick to be very low -- for that last reason you listed.

I don't see how Vance gets Trump a single vote that he doesn't already have.

I would MUCH rather have someone as VP who is strong and unwavering on conservative issues than someone who is dynamic in the way that Trump is. Trump can carry the ticket over the finish line without his VP's help. Vance can grow into the position during his time as VP, and hopefully be fully mature to run as the 2028 candidate for President.

If we run a pretend conservative who accepts and even supports "gay marriage," a woman's "right to choose," and other decidedly left wing positions, we will likely be stuck with him as the next presidential candidate.

Th point is MAGA legacy, not a roll back to GOPe globalist BS once the Trump “problem” goes away.

None of those ratings from political grift rackets should mean anything to anyone on this website.

Then what criteria would you have anyone use to assess a candidate?

Actually, I think the point is to select someone who helps Trump win. This typically means a VP candidate who bolsters his support with critical voting groups.

Vance would be a great choice. As VEEP he will give Desantis, who I consider to be in the pole position, competition for in the ‘28 race. MAGA v. MAGA, I can deal with that.

I would look for someone who appeals to a key group of voters who are not solid supporters now.

This is exactly the role Mike Pence served in 2016, by the way. Trump never would have had the level of support he got among evangelical Christians if he didn't have a running mate like Pence.

I think if Trump doesn’t pick MAGA he opens himself for criticism that he really doesn’t believe in America first. Only true GOPe types would put Trump in that position.

Sorry; I don’t see the similarity between an NGO think tank/lobbying group and a financial institution.

I don't see him as a great choice, and I sure don't like the idea that he inherits the office from Trump.

Unfortunately, the Republican side doesn't have that many well-tested people for VP that the follow on office inheritance in 2028 is a good one.

I might say it needs to be a governor that had experience in the private sector, as the best role, which currently lead to only a few choices. Senators are not a good choice.

Trump’s strategy for winning now is completely different from 2016, when he was a new, untested candidate. Everything has changed. So should his reasons for picking his VP running mate.

We are much more polarized now, with very little in-between margin of “undecideds.” Those evangelicals who were swayed toward voting for Trump on 2016 based on Pence would not be affected by another Pence-like figure as candidate. Those Evangelicals who hate Trump now won’t be swayed by ANY running mate Trump picks, and those who are sold on Trump based on his performance during his first term can only be bolstered more by a good candidate pick.

I look at how a candidate is view by the left as their bona fides. The left DESPISES Vance. That’s pretty high praise.

“Like a lot of people, I criticized Trump back in 2016,” Vance said. “And I ask folks not to judge me based on what I said in 2016, because I’ve been very open that I did say those critical things and I regret them, and I regret being wrong about the guy. I think he was a good president, I think he made a lot of good decisions for people, and I think he took a lot of flak.”

Vance added that he himself had been criticized for standing up for the former president’s voters and agenda, saying, “I think that’s the most important thing, is not what you said five years ago, but whether you’re willing to stand up and take the heat and take the hits for actually defending the interests of the American people.”

The GOP candidate went on to say he was sure his primary challengers would use his deleted tweets against him, adding that he thought they had “baggage of their own” related to Trump and other issues.
