A grateful and at times defiant Donald Trump told The Post Sunday he’s “supposed to be dead” as he recalled the harrowing moment a would-be assassin shot him at a Pennsylvania campaign rally.
The former president shared the “very surreal experience” that nearly ended his life during an interview aboard his private plane enroute to Milwaukee for the GOP National Convention.
“The doctor at the hospital said he never saw anything like this, he called it a miracle,” said Trump, who was sporting a loose, large white bandage that covered his right ear. His staff insisted that no photos be taken.
“I’m not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be dead,” Trump said. “I’m supposed to be dead.”
He said he would be if he had not turned his head slightly to the right to read a chart on illegal immigrants. At that instant, what would have been a kill shot instead tore off a small piece of his ear and splattered blood on his forehead and cheek.
Trump said that as Secret Service agents led him off stage, he still wanted to continue speaking to supporters, but the agents told him it wasn’t safe and they had to get him to a hospital.
He marveled at how the agents came flying in like they were “linebackers” as soon as the shooting started and he unbuttoned his white long sleeve shirt to show a large bruise on his right forearm.
He also cleared up a mystery about his shoes. On the video of the shooting and aftermath, as the burly agents tried to rush him off the stage for safety, he can be heard saying, “Wait, I want to get my shoes.”

With the first pop noise, I knew it was gunfire. And when President Trump went down, I thought they got him, so did my mom.
It was so horrible! We were both yelling and crying -awful.
I have heard many times, people talk about JFK's assassination, and they will ask one another: "Do you remember where you were when President Kennedy was shot?". This happened before I was born, and I didn't really understand, or grasp the magnitude of what happened, until now.
As you, and others, have posted, I didn't sleep much at all, either, and have been feeling shocked, angry, and just emotionally rung out.
(I can't IMAGINE how President Trump and his family are feeling.)
In fact, I'm still having difficulty processing this.
That said-Thank the Lord Almighty, that Donald John Trump is still here with us!
God bless this heroic, one of a kind, man, and his brave, and devoted, family.

I can’t imagine watching it live like you did - I hadn’t even thought of that and what one would think. I watched it after hearing reports that “somebody threw firecrackers at Trump and he cut his rally short”.

How absolutely horrific it would have been had he been on stage and that lunatic had succeeded. It would have traumatized this nation beyond belief. This was a dastardly act and truly makes me view the democrats in a much worse light than I ever have before. Trump may have said some offensive things in his time, but none of it has ever justified what they attempted on Saturday. II must say this changes how I look at the world and people I know even in my own circles. These vile people are so afraid of giving up their posts of power that they have to resort to this. My God, republicans …. Fight back. Use this in every political ad imaginable … tie them to their vile rhetoric — make the American people finally understand what they’re all about. Because once they do take him down, and believe me, they will try again, the next ones they come for will be us.

Surviving a near-death experience is an empowering thing … the adrenaline, the natural entheogens the body releases like the tryptamines, it can be a peak moment if handled wisely. Trump has superior spiritual guidance and he will be surrounded by love at the Convention. Good times are back in town!
