Republicans Will Regret a Second Trump Term
The New York Times ^ | July 13, 2024, 7:00 a.m. ET | Bret Stephens

Posted on 07/13/2024 6:12:25 AM PDT by E. Pluribus Unum

Now is the summer of Republican content.

The G.O.P. is confident and unified. Donald Trump has held a consistent and widening lead over President Biden in all the battleground states. Never Trumpers have been exiled, purged or converted. The Supreme Court has eased many of Trump’s legal travails while his felony convictions in New York seem to have inflicted only minimal political damage — if they didn’t actually help him.

Best of all for Republicans, a diminished Joe Biden seems determined to stay in the race, leading a dispirited and divided party that thinks of its presumptive nominee as one might think of a colonoscopy: an unpleasant reminder of age. Even if Biden can be cajoled into quitting, his likeliest replacement is Vice President Kamala Harris, whose 37 percent approval rating is just around that of her boss. Do Democrats really think they can run on her non-handling of the border crisis, her reputation for managerial incompetence or her verbal gaffes?

In short, Republicans have good reason to think they’ll be back in the White House next January. Only then will the regrets set in.

Three in particular: First, Trump won’t slay the left; instead, he will re-energize and radicalize it. Second, Trump will be a down-ballot loser, leading to divided and paralyzed government. Third, Trump’s second-term personnel won’t be like the ones in his first. Instead, he will appoint his Trumpiest people and pursue his Trumpiest instincts. The results won’t be ones old-school Republicans want or expect.

But not anywhere near as much as RATs will. LOL

Leftist intent is always so obvious.

The last 3.5 years under the fraud Biden regime has been the most miserable years yet.

“First, Trump won’t slay the left; instead, he will re-energize and radicalize it.”

He’s partially correct. It will be the democrat party leaders who incite violence and mayhem. They do not believe in democracy or freedom.

All patriotic Americans will appreciate the mass arrests of communist tyrants in America and their imprisonment or hanging. Leftists cannot “re-energize” if they are permanently taken out. There will be plenty of OVERDUE reckoning for American patriots to celebrate.
*********
Don’t be ridiculous. There will be no reckoning for the Communists. No prison for political beliefs and no hangings. Get a grip.

That’s proof the DNC hate their children and grandchildren.

Well, maybe not their own, but definitely yours, mine, and everyone else's.

This Bret Stephens is a feckless loser and a mouthpiece for big-government globalists.

Trump having a mandate to obliterate the Deep State should hurt Republicans..

They’re co owners of the swamp Trump has been at war with since 2015.

Oh, thank you so much NYT. I’m sure you are just trying to help Republicans. I can trust your sincerity and honesty. (s.)

By the way, what serious person would say “Trumpiest”? Clearly, they don’t expect much from their readers.

He lists those 3 “consequences” of Trump winning as if they were negatives, when in fact they are signs of Winning!
The Left will tantrum whether they win or lose, as is happening now in France.

The most important thing a second Trump term will provide is a 4 year buffer from the fall of this once great nation.

A close second is the pure joy I’ll get watching liberals melt down.

Wish I could share the enthusiasm for a Trump victory in November. The polls certainly suggest it.

Unfortunately, I recall how the polls in 2020 predicted a Trump win and the result was very different.

The reason - cheating.

Why would the dems. NOT repeat their winning strategy. Has the GOP wised-up and found a way to stop it?

Would like to think so, but......

I do so hope I am wrong.

I regret the New York Times lied and covered for Joe Biden's mental problems and that their lies caused the mess we're in today.

What will a Trump presidency look like?

It will look like $36Trillion in debt.

You think a GOP gov’t will cut spending? No way in hell.

You think a GOP gov’t will re-impose the debt ceiling (it is currently suspended) at a level equal to the debt on that precise day? No way in hell. It will re-impose the debt ceiling . . . at something like $40T, knowing it will be revisited in 2027 or so.

You think a GOP govt will cut taxes? Yes, they will. Some insignificant amount for PR purposes — which, btw, will increase the deficit that year, and debt whose ceiling they will find they did not increase enough.

Trump will come to power and assign people to attack the lobbyist culture in DC, and re-assign the senior-most people at various agencies to some duties that do nothing. You can’t fire them. Civil Service regulations prevent it, and you can’t transfer them out of DC, because regulations have a 50 mile limit. What you can do it assign them to meaningless jobs. They still draw their SES-X pay at high levels, but they will have no more power.

Trump can cancel all daily White House news briefings. No more press secretary. All those Swamp filth high paid media folk who fill that room daily will have to find honest work.

THIS is what the 2nd term looks like. There will be no new policy initiatives because $36Trillion says no to EVERYTHING new. Unless . . . you expect no more conservatism in gov’t and new programs to get funded. Conservatism is NO new programs get funded. If you want new programs, of any kind, you are not conservative.
