NATO is a bureaucracy. They want to expand.
Name me a bureaucracy that tries to shrink itself in scope of powers, people, budget?
In the West you had folks heavily investing in Ukraine, and EU and NATO membership are security guarantees essentially for these huge corporations, oligarchs and financial institutions.
In the US especially, you have Cold War threat pictures which persist to this day.
The US and Russia have been tap dancing around each other for years, with us being the big guy and calling the shots and becoming ever more assertive/aggressive even though we claim to be defensive and all about some BS fluffy cause like democracy, human rights and sovereignty. Reality is we are invading Russia’s sphere of influence and have been non-stop since ~2003: Iraq, Syria, Venezuela, Libya, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Republic of Georgia, and Ukraine. That’s not Russia expanding, it’s us. And all of it is economically motivated.
Even though we like to talk about Russian propaganda (colloquially meaning I don’t have an argument) the truth is we block ~40 Russia media outlets, near all their government and self censor in our media and big tech. If you want the Russian perspective, you have to literally get around the obstacles our free speech and open press loving governments put in place.
You have few business ties so you don’t have any big voices in the US speaking up for the Russian perspective like you do for China. Screw with China and even US firms like Cisco, HP, Dell, Apple, Amazon, will all gang up against you. Likewise, you have near zero Russian lobbying efforts in the US. So, you end up with a very odd situation where Russia is villainized, but US government officials LITERALLY tell China (PRC) not to worry and that things will calm down soon after their naval blockade of Taiwan, that the US government will take no substantial action which would impact trade. On a sliding scale how would you compare Russia and China in terms of human rights, democracy, freedom?
But China does have lobbying efforts, they are politically active in US elections through their subsidiaries (that legally give to campaigns and their parties) in the US, they do have a US media engagement plan, and we do conduct MAJOR trade with them (both ways), so it’s simply not mentioned or downplayed. We look the other way regards questionable organ harvesting programs, mass internment camps, suppression of religion, mass executions, a single party communist regime which runs the place...
IMHO, when you exclude someone (deliberately: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41991683) and make decisions all by yourself and among your buddies (EU / NATO), but these decisions impact the other person, and you give ZERO consideration to them, it can lead to bad outcomes.
There are a lot of forces and they are all pushing in one direction on our side.
What Russia thinks does matter. Maybe it had to take 100,000 lives to drive that point home.
