NASCAR debuted what it claims is the future of racing, its electric ABB NASCAR EV Prototype, at the Chicago Street Race event on Saturday, but fans were not impressed.
The vehicle was developed in partnership with Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, and electric vehicle (EV) developer ABB, all in an effort to reach NASCAR’s “sustainability” goals. One of those goals is to reach “net-zero” operating emissions in the next ten years, the racing organization said in its press release:
While NASCAR is committed to the historic role of the combustion engine in racing, it is also committed to decarbonizing its operations and reducing its own carbon footprint to zero across its core operations by 2035 through electrification and innovative solutions.
Many fans, though, were not all that interested in NASCAR going electric and did not support the organization’s X post announcing the prototype racer.
“The day this hits the track I’m done,” one X user said in disgust.

Can’t wait to see Joe Biden plugging in one of these cars during a race! Think of the historical significance!
NASCAR Lite
Hooch is what created stock car races. Maybe they can develop a net zero racecar that runs on pure Ethanol. Get the fuel from Jim Beam or the maker of EverPure grain alchohol. That stuff would burn.
Better fuel by far would be methanol. Burns very clean, unlike the corn derived ethanol in auto fuels. Burns dirty, and rots rubber parts in small engines (which may have been the intent to drive people to idiotic battery grass cutters).
I read the ev dodge charger(oh, I get it) has a sound system tied to the throttle to sound like a hemi. 😵💫
Wait until the first crash where the batteries short out and fire erupts that can’t be put out and no one wants to touch the car for fear of electrocution. This is all theater because the race cars burn fuel that is essentially pollution free.
Does France still run NASCAR?
I stopped when they stopped using stock cars.
Wait until the first crash, when the track and people in the stands are showered with flaming battery chemicals that can’t be extinguished.
NO way!
That’s the first adrenaline dose!
Vroom, vroom, vroom!
Bzzzt!
Thunk!
I wonder how refueling works. If they have a hotswap battery this might be possible. And that would actually improve commercial EVs because the biggest issue is the slow refuel rate. Hotswap batteries would fix that.
The crashes will be spectacular. A huge ball of flames consuming the car and the driver in an instant. The spectators will get a huge dose of deadly toxic chemicals to breath.
Whirlpool Formula E electric auto racing
I think literally NO ONE who considers themselves a fan of NASCAR cars about what type of fuel the cars burn, it’s been part of the sport from day one.
The only people who care about Net Zero or Sustainability in NASCAR are the people at the top and maybe a few sponsors.
I’ve been to Daytona 500 twice and camped in the infield.
The roar is deafening.
I cannot imagine a ‘silent’ 500.....................
The crash would spray burning lithium on the spectators.
Sounds like fun. Not.
This is an awful idea! Instead of rain delays they’ll have charging delays.
NASCAR still has fans? Who knew?
EV NASCAR - it’s like current NASCAR, but with the added excitement of watching paint dry - silently.
The Isle of Mann TT race has an EV race; but it continues to have many more IC motorcycle races. The bikes are fast, but not as fast as the IC bikes. And the race is only one lap since 32 miles is reaching the EV bikes’ range limits. There is sound, but much less and not at all the same.
If NASCAR wants to try short EV races, and then the big boy races, it might work.
