Target pushes shoplifting crackdown by telling employees to stop thefts worth at least $50

Target plans to crack down on retail theft by lowering the threshold for how much shoplifters can swipe before employees are allowed to finally step in, according to a report.

The Minnesota-based big box retail chain — which has blamed retail theft for hurting its bottom line — instructed store staff to halt bandits who try to flee with items totaling $50, down from the previous sum of $100, Bloomberg News reported Thursday.

Target actually had a policy where staff could try to stop shoplifters who stole $100 or more. Who knew?

The old policy didn’t seem to deter many thieves. So I wonder if lowering the dollar amount will do any good, especially if your local justice system is catch-and-release.

I also wonder what would happen should an employee or thief get badly hurt. No doubt personal injury lawyers are standing by the phones for just such an occurrence.

Too little too late. Someone’s going to get killed trying to stop some scrub from stealing a pair of shoes. Baaaaadd idea.

I would not advise a retail worker being paid 16 bucks an hour to risk their life to prevent a $51.00 item from being stolen from their employer.

This is the only time I’ll 100% agree with this comment from an employee..

“you don’t pay me enough to do that”

your average store clerk is not paid nor trained enough to deal with this stuff. This policy could get someone killed.

Agreed. They’d be better off hiring off duty LEOs that are formally trained to handle this kind of thing.

What target oughta do is follow the Kohl’s department store shoplifting model.....whatever it is it works. Not a December goes by that I don’t see a police car at the front door with at least one person in the back seat.....it’s gotta be shoplifting.

I wouldn’t follow it (I’d cite life and limb and anything else I can think of). In reality, I’d lump it in with employers trying to get the employees they fired for not taking the clot chot to come back to work: they made a decision, they can live with that decision.

That’s my worry as well

Not that thieves should be able to steal

But there are a LOT of retail thieves and for them, it’s a lifestyle

I’m actually worried for Target’s employees

If I were a cashier at Target I’d be thinking - Right, I try to stop a guy and he’s allowed to stab me, get arrested, and be home in time for dinner? I think not. Sorry Target, the democrats destroyed the legal system from enforcement up and I am not your security guard.

Yes, there should be LEOs in the stores IMHO

Same with Walmart

Leave it to a woke company to suggest their employees put themselves in this kind of jeopardy. SMH

n my local Target the underwear is locked up. You have to push a button on the plexiglass covering of the shelves to summon a Target employee to unlock the covering. Sad. Really sad.

It should be $1. And reward and promote employees who step up and help stop shoplifting. Further, press charges and help prosecute shoplifters.

I wonder what exactly an antigun corporation in a Blue state means when it demands that employees “stop” those stealing merchandise.

Are employees supposed to stop fleeing thieves, scan the QR codes of their haul to make sure it's over $50 and then tackle them?

Either local cops and the local DA do their jobs, or crime continues unabated. Keep voting Democrat, idiots - see how quickly your city becomes the next Detroit.

Agreed. From what I can tell, many of today’s shoplifters fall into one of two groups: mentally ill loners and violent, self-entitled folks. Neither group will surrender easily.

As you noted, it’s too little too late. These stores, if they don’t want to simply close, might have to go to a kiosk system. Order what you want. Then an employee gets it for you. After you pay, of course.

When I worked for Radio Shack, my boss went after ANY bad check, no matter how small, in court. He said it was because "If word gets out there are no consequences, people will steal you blind."

Will someone PLEASE tell California, with their "Steal All You Want Under $950 Crime Tolerance Laws" that they are truly idiots?

Folks,

This is a major change.

Maybe because they have closed all stores where that wouldn’t work?

It is another small step in changing our society? MAGA

Their corporate lawyers and management have done the math. In 2022, Target had theft losses of $700 million. In 2023, they predicted it would be $500 million MORE. And I imagine for 2024, it will go even higher

They may be at the point where the survival of the company is at stake.

Target is just telling their employees to temporarily identify as a large, armed, male cop.
