Ukrainian navy chief says sea drone strikes have rendered Russia's Black Sea Fleet HQ in occupied Crimea effectively useless

Vice-Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa said Russian fleet had to relocate due to significant damage to Crimea base. Ukraine has huge success targeting the Black Sea Fleet with sea drones.

Ukraine's sea drone and missile attacks have left Russia's Black Sea Fleet headquarters at Sevastopol effectively useless and forced many of its ships to relocate to other locations

Vice-Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa told Reuters news agency that "almost all the main combat-ready ships have been moved by the enemy from the main base of the Black Sea Fleet" following significant damage to the Crimean base. "The ships are kept in Novorossiisk, and some of them are kept in the Sea of Azov," Neizhpapa said.

The Sevastopol headquarters was the site of numerous key functions for the Black Sea Fleet, including training, repairs, and storing ammunition.

The UK Ministry of Defence said in April that moving the fleet to Novorossiisk was likely the "best method of avoiding Ukrainian sea-borne attack,"

Ukraine, which lost most of its traditional navy during the annexation of Crimea in 2014, has targeted Russia's Black Sea fleet with great success using sea drones, as well as hitting targets in occupied Crimea with US-made ATACMS missiles.

by targeting Crimea, especially Russian ground-based air-defense (GBAD) systems, Ukraine was "preparing the ground" for future air strikes once F-16 jets arrived.

"Crimea is vulnerable," he said. "The Russians have relatively limited maneuver space on the peninsula."

"Putin has a lot to lose both politically and militarily. So if a limited number of fighters can have a real impact, it is here — and above the Black Sea that becomes fully accessible once the GBAD on Crimea is dealt with," he added.

Neizhpapa told Reuters that the expected delivery of F-16 fighter aircraft later this year would help Ukraine challenge Russia's dominance over the region.

Frederik Mertens, a strategic analyst at the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, previously told BI that by targeting Crimea, especially Russian ground-based air-defense (GBAD) systems, Ukraine was “preparing the ground” for future air strikes once F-16 jets arrived.

“Crimea is vulnerable,” he said. “The Russians have relatively limited maneuver space on the peninsula.”

“Putin has a lot to lose both politically and militarily. So if a limited number of fighters can have a real impact, it is here — and above the Black Sea that becomes fully accessible once the GBAD on Crimea is dealt with,” he added.

Neizhpapa told Reuters that the expected delivery of F-16 fighter aircraft later this year would help Ukraine challenge Russia’s dominance over the region.

“F-16s with the right armaments will be able to push away Russian warplanes,” he said. “The northwestern part of the Black Sea, particularly the corridor for civilian ships, will be almost 100% secure.”

Dima (or maybe Alexander) noted that it has been 12 DAYS since a Neocon drone was in the Black Sea. Seems as though the phone call from SOD Austin helped the Neocons understand that their stunt of flying missile over crowded beaches was NOT such a good idea.

The Houtis are changing how military tactics are done.

The Houthis are attacking unarmed or lightly armed commercial ships. I don’t believe they’ve had any success on military targets. But they are successfully denying the Red Sea/Suez Canal to a lot of shipping.

Between the Ukrainian diplomatic failure in Switzerland, and US involvement in targeting cuvilians on the second holiest religious date on the Orthodox calendar, the world opinion was changed.

Russia came away in the final days of June 2024 as the more respected party in this conflict.

Zelensky’s aide also said F’em, and it only served to further errode Ukrainian standing. Cheering the deaths of children made an irresversable negative impression this Ukraine govt will always be remembered.

This was the week the Fab3000 started causing emotional damage to Ukraine.

Ukraine has lost an average of 2000 soldiers a day for over 5 weeks now.

Russia is increasing thevops tempo, increasing the use of frontline aviation bombings, and Ukraine is cracking on 4 of 7 fronts.

Killing civilians on holiday was the turning point in this war. The global hawks are gone. Ukrainian airfields are gone. The power gride is a strikes from finished. Zelensky is now talking peace deals.

Ukraine and the US lost the war for world opinion in a single weekend.

Ukraine can take back the Crimea anytime it wants. The place is is out of supply and too far from Russian drones and airpower. I suspect Ukraine is waiting for the right moment for this to have maximum political and psychological effect.

This is the situation all navies find themselves in. When the Houthis push the USN around with only Iranian supplied drones and missiles, all navies are obsolete. Since the U.S. has by far the largest number of naval assets, the U.S. suffers the greatest loss in this equation.
