The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) launched an investigation into the death of a major general, officials said Tuesday, after the officer's body was found on the Twentynine Palms marine base in California over the weekend.
Details about the death of Maj. Gen. William Mullen have not been disclosed so far, but the retired officer was discovered dead on the base on Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Times. NCIS is a law enforcement agency for the Department of the Navy that leads criminal investigations and probes noncombat deaths of Navy sailors and Marines.

Mullen previously served as the commander of the base before he retired in 2020, and served multiple tours of the Middle East. He also served as a Marine aide to former President Bill Clinton, and led a counternarcotics mission in the Los Padres National Forest, which is located in Southern and Central California.

My first inclination is suicide as a cause of death. Some career military retirees can’t adjust to retirement.
Oh are you missing out. If you get the chance, watch the first four or five seasons of the tv show NCIS. It should be available on one of the big platforms (Netflix, Amazon, etc). David McCallum, who played Ilya Kuryakin in the old TV show “Man from U.N.C.L.E.” plays the medical examiner, Dr. Mallard (hence the nickname Ducky, though only to his friends) in NCIS. The show itself is pretty good, and McCallum got so good at his part through research (he trained with a coroner for the role) that he sometimes got invited to actual medical conferences to speak.
My guess would be it was self inflicted, mental health is a huge problem in the military.
I notice they are not saying where on the base he was found.
