Biden administration proposes rule for workplaces to address excessive heat

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration proposed a new rule Tuesday to address excessive heat in the workplace, as tens of millions of people in the U.S. are under heat advisories due to blistering temperatures.

If finalized, the measure would protect an estimated 36 million U.S. workers from injuries related to heat exposure on the job — establishing the first major federal safety standard of its kind. Those affected by excessive heat in the workplace include farmworkers, delivery and construction workers, landscapers and indoor workers in warehouses, factories and kitchens.

Under the proposed rule, employers would be required to identify heat hazards, develop emergency response plans related to heat illness, and provide training to employees and supervisors on the signs and symptoms of such illnesses. They would also have to establish rest breaks, provide shade and water, and heat acclimatization — or the building of tolerance to higher temperatures — for new workers.

Penalties for heat-related violations in workplaces would increase significantly, in line with what workplaces are issued for violations of Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules, a senior White House administration official said.

If finalized, the Democratic administration’s rule would override state measures, and states with existing procedures to deal with heat would have to institute measures that are at least as stringent as the finalized federal rule.

Ok? Call me confused, but we already have regulations on this. I recall writing plans like this as an EHS manager.

The Constitution doesn’t let the federal government dictate this sort of thing, but pay that no mind.

Ah, this explains a raging commie comment I heard elsewhere ...Some Democrat complaining deSantis and Trump were against heat safety protocols for workers.

Then the loon went on to blame Repulicans for feral cats getting pregnant.

Temps locally dropped from the mid to upper 90s to upper 70s lower 80s. Biden has already dropped the temps here. He is the greatest. /s

Yes, Chevron. Otherwise, by what authority? How did we ever manage in the past? Anything to prevent work.

We have always had heat contingency plans. My late Father would start work as early as 0500 for his crews exposed to high heat. The measures we went through in S. Texas for rig crews were elaborate with "Hydration Technicians" to go around making sure everyone drank the right amount of water, there were coolig rooms, scheduled breaks etc. You can't afford to have people dropping from heat stroke, that would not just be irresponsible it is stupid. When I started in W. Texas we just suffered through it all with lots of water and salt tablets. Offshore was the worst I have ever seen with the humidity. It was not even worth trying to work at times. Just too many accident possibilities and the work went too slow to measure. Imagine squirming in between two 4" thick slabs of steel to wrestle out and back in 1,200 lb valves with chain falls in 90 plus degree heat and near 100% humidity. Expecting people to do that is just stupid unless it is an emergency. We worked at night with expanded crews in those conditions.

My medications have rendered me heat intolerant and so I just stay in now and wait it out. Never had a problem before, just struggle through. Something else lost to age and circumstance to envy the younger guys for. I was on a loader yesterday just sitting and the sweat was running into puddles on the floor.

We could do this like Kuwait where it is illegal to work if the temperature exceeds 120 F or so and so the temperature never exceeds 120 F. Problem solved.

tens of millions of people in the U.S. are under heat advisories due to blistering temperatures.

Keep that propaganda coming. In the old days, it was not considered hysteria-level news that temperatures hit 90 degrees and sometimes 100 degrees in the summer. People went to work and dealt with it.

I’ve worked on crews where you had to collect your urine for “inspection” by the hydration tech. Quantity and color being the main concerns.

If Joe Pedo has the money to pay for thousands of freeloading, deadbeat college students’ loans, he should have the money to pay for air conditioners to cool down workers who pay taxes. It’s your “watch”, FIX IT “BACK BETTER” MORON!

“Biden administration proposes rule for workplaces to address excessive heat”

Maybe if they didn’t regulate the crap out of air conditioning they wouldn’t even need to propose this.

Most of these “new” rules are redundant.

But typical of government do gooders, they create new more burdensome rules instead of enforcing the existing rules on the books.

Why can’t there be a Black Flag Rule like Parris Island has?

I nearly had a stroke when I went to my son-in-law’s graduation from PI in 1999. The barracks we used in 1961 are now air-conditioned!

Top kek.

If Biden and Jill can’t take the heat, they should get out of the Oval Office.
